Clogs and shawls ahoy - the June 2005 Northern meet-up

Ladies,

As discussed, my arrival in the lands of the north clearly warrants a gathering of the northern Junies Feel free to instruct me on:

  • clog wearing (noting I have lived in Holland so know a bit about this)
  • morris dancing in yellow and black rags, as witnessed in Otley
  • using a horse and cart for transport, as witnessed in Bradford.

In return I can offer hints and tips on living in a completely flat place, pig farming and the horrors of having a sugar beet factory nearby. (The smell made me gag big time during my first trimester).

Anyway, on a more serious note, consideration should be given to:

  • weekday v. weekend
  • babies + others?
  • location. I did have a thought that Hebden Bridge might be fun, being half way between Leeds and Manchester. But a bit more problematic for Sheffielders and Yorkists (and particularly EYM if she was up for a visit from Hull).

I arrive on 7 November, and my preference would be for late November, i.e. before I return to work. But let me know what you think.

Hebden Bridge is fine for me, but I think we kind of made a deal with Mrs.W that would be in Leeds this time around, so I would stick with that for now. It will also make it easier for othrs to join us.

I would prefer weekdays, so I would just have to bring baby. If weekend. I may needto also bring DH and DD along.

MrsWednesday · 19/10/2005 21:28

You get free morris dancing lessons when you sign your contract, hasn't your landlord arranged that for you yet?

Just say if you need any language tuition by the way. Us locals are hard to understand, must be all that coal we chew!

I'm happy to go anywhere (thanks for thinking of me though Lua ) but agree it might be hard for those coming by train to get to Hebden Bridge. Perhaps they could hire a horse and cart instead?

Tuesdays and Wednesdays would be better for me as I'll just have DS2 with me then, but if others are bringing older siblings I'm happy to do another day too.

katzguk · 19/10/2005 22:09

Trib - how far from the sugar beat factory were you? My Grandad lives in Great Barton and my Grandma in Bury St Edmunds.

to be DD1 free and to only have DD2 i need a weds or thursday

eastyorksmum · 20/10/2005 09:06

Im here mumss lol you knew i would be

lol where the heck is hebden bridge?

dont know because im a clog wearing morris dancer, and things are simple down eye rushes off to dance round flag pole

I can do week days too, but prefer some where on trian line, im fine with Leeds if that ok with you trib?

lua · 20/10/2005 10:44

So shall we stick with Leeds and try to find a wed that work for all?
How about the 16th?

KVG, Mandy, JonahB, you guys coming along?

tribpot · 20/10/2005 10:57

16th is good for me, have put it in the diary provisionally. Hebden is on the train line I should point out, is not completely the back of beyond However, Leeds is obviously more centrally located so that's all good.

Katz, we're about a mile from the dreaded sugar beet factory on the east side of Bury. So far this season the wind has been blowing the other way, but it really is gagtastic.

Btw, re: language tuition, I do fear for dh being a proper Tractor Boy and all (not that he talks like a yokel I might add). I'm not sure he really understands my best friend (who is from the other Bury, the one near Manchester). Oh well. He will learn!

I have just checked and it is 2 hours on the train from nottingham to leeds, as it isn't direct . I just don't think I can cope with 4 hours on the train with dd. Pain in the derriere as I would love to have met up with all of you. If I was feeling braver, I would drive, as that might be quicker, but I am a big wuss and don't really fancy the M1 either .

tribpot · 20/10/2005 11:37

That's a shame mandy It'd prob take about an hour and a half by car but parking in Leeds could be a bit of a mare. There are direct trains from Derby if that's any help - and even the occasional one from Newark!

katzguk · 20/10/2005 12:11

northerner · 20/10/2005 12:14

No KVG, I think Coop comes from the Ipswich area, we live in Bury St Edmunds, sort of half way between Cambridge and Ipswich.

16th sounds good. Wonder if I should offer to host it round chez tribpot so I could get you all helping me unpack

eastyorksmum · 28/10/2005 23:04

hiya are we still saying the 16th november then?

as its my sisters wedding the weekend the 11/nov

Leeds is fine with me

katzguk · 29/10/2005 09:55

16th for me

tribpot · 03/11/2005 14:37

Ladies, looks like we have a date on the 16th. Just need to decide on a location suitably close to the station and where we can take the babes. Katz, Lua, last time we met up in the Slug but might be a bit difficult to cram us all into the tiny non-smoking section this time? Lots of other possibilities though.

I'll be out of touch for the next while as moving + time it takes to shift a broadband connection is FOREVER (or 10 days)

So far we have katz, EYM, lua, KVG and me as definites. MrsW, are you in?

See you all soon!

Excellent! I'll get my thinking cap on and come up with some suggestions for a venue.

Thinking flat cap, MrsW

If I'm really struggling with internet access once we've moved, I'll send you an email to see what the plan is. Looking forward to a rerun of my meeting with Tea but on a grander scale, where my ds is by far the grumpiest baby in the world.

Just popping in briefly (god dial-up is awful, must find a wireless card and see if any of my neighbours have an unsecured wireless network). Hope all is well, we have survived the move albeit we are living surrounding by boxes, think Cardboard City under Waterloo Bridge.

Went out to the GP surgery this morning, saw two separate people on horseback, one was even walking/running her dog! I see cars and buses though so I know that the invention of the internal combustion engine has made it this far north.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you next week! MrsW, will you send me an email when a venue has been decided upon?

OP posts:
lua · 11/11/2005 11:17

Hi there!
So are we still meeting?
When and where? I think it would be better for me if it is a bit on the late side for me.

tribpot · 11/11/2005 18:59

lua, I think we're still meeting up next Wednesday, am planning a trial run on the train tomorrow just to be sure of my bearings!

OP posts:
katzguk · 13/11/2005 08:37

i'm going to have to bow out i'm afraid. DH has got some extra teaching at work and wednesday pm and i would have to leave Leeds at about 1 to get back in time!

lua · 14/11/2005 20:30

Sorry guys, it looks like I'll have to skipit too!
Sorry! DS is starting nursery and they won't let me go for more than an hour on wed.
