Oxford DPhil residency requirements

Hi, I’m looking at (hopefully) undertaking a Dphil at Oxford. I’m wondering about the residency requirements. I understand that for postgraduate research, the requirement is within 25 miles of Carfax for at least 6 weeks / 6 terms.
How can this work in reality? We live about double that distance away, on a direct train line. I’m guessing I would need to stay in college for the specified time, but is it expected to be in Oxford over weekends? My children are teenagers so I have some flexibility and willingness to do what it takes, but for practical reasons, it would be useful to know what the expectations and limitations are. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thank you

Oxford academic here: ask your College for an exception to this rule. It's common for mature students.

Oh thank you, so it might be feasible to live at home and commute in when needed? Thank you so much, this is best case scenario.

Is it full-time? If so it might depend on what they count as exceptional circumstances.

Thanks, yes full time. Was hoping someone might know what exceptional circumstances include but if not, I’m presuming weekends would be fine anyway?
