so I’m thinking of retraining as a midwife and wondered if there was anyone out there that could give me some advice on their experiences either in midwifery training or going back to uni as a mature student?
I’ve been considering it on/off for the last few years as I love the idea of being there for Mothers during the birth. I had quite bad PPD during my kids early years and I’d like to do something worthwhile. Something about midwifery appeals to me. It also scares me a little as it’s entirely new and completely different to what I’ve done before but since I’ve taken up researching the role recently again I’m feeling a little excited about the prospect?
So a bit of background on me:
I am 38 yr old woman, 2x kids (8y son & 6y daughter) both settled at primary school.
I used to work in fashion as a quality assurance until 10 yrs ago when we decided to move back home to Peak District after meeting my OH in New Zealand. I traveled well within my career (Turkey, China, SH, HK & Auckland) and enjoyed the fast pace & buzz.
After having kids I’ve mainly worked in admin related roles- my current employer is fab (v understanding when kids are ill, flexible around term times, etc.) but I’ve ‘stretched’ the role as much as possible within the Business and, if I’m being honest, I’m bored!
My OH works in Education Management which is corporate and not much flexibility hence why my job has had to have all the flex around the kids. Re-shuffling this might be a struggle to start with around shift work but TBH I want my own career and progression.
Whilst we both love England we’re seriously considering going back to NZ just because we think it might be a better place for our kids to grow up in. Due to OH’s experience & quals he could get in under the live2residency visa. But here’s where it gets tricky… If I’m honest, things haven’t been great between me&OH for a long time and the prospect of being the other side of the world without any way to support me/kids is terrifying and not a position I want to be in. I know it won’t be easy but I’d feel a lot less exposed and vulnerable?
