Bookkeeping

Hi,
I'm thinking of retraining as a book keeper, I've looked at the aat courses and they seem very reasonably priced. I currently work in NHS so have no experience of private business.
Wondering if anyone works in the role and if they enjoy it and if these qualifications are too cheap to be true?

AAT is a great qualification. Where do you see your career going. What are your aims

@topcat2014 thanks for you reply. I am currently in a career but I was thinking maybe I would just like a job I could be competent at! My mum also has a friend who is a self employed book keeper. Be grateful to hear thoughts.

There are more and more regulations prior to setting up as a bookkeeper now, it could be more profitable to aim towards working in house for a small business etc

I am thinking of doing this too OP, although I don't think I want to set myself up as self employed. I'm hoping to find a part time job in a small company that will take me to retirement and beyond (I'm someone who doesn't want to retire fully). I have some experience in basic bookkeeping in previous jobs and hoping I can convert this to a useful qualification without loads of study! Specifically, which courses are you looking at?

Ah that's useful to know @topcat2014
I was looking at the https://www.aat.org.uk/qualifications-and-courses/bookkeeping
They seemed really reasonable for further qualifications, but then l looked at salaries of book keepers and maybe that's why! I had been looking at masters which were thousands. It would be quite a salary cut for me which I don't mind if for a couple of years but unfortunately still midlife with kids and large mortgage!

Did you go ahead with the course op? I'm also thinking of retraining as a book keeper and wondering how you're finding it if you have started yet?

Teamsaction · 07/03/2026 15:08

@CDTC no I haven't! I had some other things come up, would be interested if anyone does though!
