Retrain for a part time career

I’m 44 and will be made redundant in the new year from my current role largely due to health reasons. I currently work in banking in a middle management role.

I can not stay in the industry as due to my poor health I can’t sustain the long hours and high pressure nature environment. I would like to retrain however due to my health issues I will only be able to work part time and can not do anything overly physical in nature.

I work in a COO team and would say I’m good at lots of things but not great at anything. I started as a cashier in a high street bank at 17 and worked my way up so have no qualifications or degrees.
I am good with people and my skills are good communicator, project planning, ability to grasp concepts quickly and I am good with numbers. Outside of work I am quite creative and enjoy reading, painting and general arts and crafts if that helps.

I am fortunate that I will get a very healthy package and I have a good cushion of savings so salary isn’t important, it’s more finding something that can work with my limitations and that I can go into on a part time or self employed consultancy basis straight after retraining. Any thoughts or ideas gratefully appreciated.

Are there freelancing or contracting opportunities in your sector?

I work in marketing and a while back I was also struggling with the pressures of agecy life and long hours so made the switch to self-employment where you are much more in control of how much work you take on and get to set your own deadlines.

Other ideas would be going back to work as a cashier or advisor in a retail setting or taking on some part time book keeping work locally, just while you figure out what to do next?

Wishing you lots of luck!
