Reference from old tutor or colleague/line manager?

So I thought for a reference you are meant to get a previous tutor/lecturer. I asked one of mine and he hasn't replied. I have a feeling he feels like it's too long (15 years ago since I did undergrad). I could try a couple of other tutors I've kept in touch with who could say a couple of nice things but I'm sure all recollections of my time in class will be a bit murky.

Who is best to ask and who have you asked? Thanks!

When applying for my PhD I gave my line manager and previously line manager as it was 25 years since I did my MA.

I got one from tutor about 12/13 years after graduation. He was quite happy to do it, said it was normal and had even dug up remembered what I did my dissertation on.

@thedevilinablackdress thanks, I originally contacted my tutor because I thought it's only been 15 years. But as I mentioned, he hasn't replied.

Unfortunately the tutor who taught me during my dissertation has since died! I have another I can ask but suspect he won't be able to give a detailed account of my work although he was always complimentary and I got good marks.
