Good evening 👋
I am looking for some advice...
Twenty years ago I graduated with a BSc in psychology and business (two separate disciplines not combined). I then went on to work in unrelated office work until I became pregnant and stopped work in 2010 to have my first child. I intended to return to work after maternity leave but my eldest turned out to have complicated needs and I've been a registered carer for him since. I am currently pregnant with baby number 3 but given that DS1 will be 17 by the time number 3 goes to nursery I am thinking about a fresh start for myself after all these years.
I feel completely out my depth and lost though as even though people tell me I will have gained transferable skills whilst being a carer etc I know that the reality is that actual work experience counts more and it's a hard sell and one which I'm not confident in. I feel I will be up against people who have just graduated and are far more employable. Particularly anything psychology related seems to require many more years worth of qualifications and then work experience. I am not fixed on a particular area of work at all and very happy to work for an employer or for myself if I can find a suitable field.
I wondered if there might be something that I could retrain in that would put me in good stead when looking for a job in a couple years time. Google results are mind boggling though! Do you either have suggestions of courses that might be good and can be done within that timeframe (part time) or suggestions of a job that is flexible that I could start sooner if working from home.
At the end of it due to family circumstances, I would ideally choose to work either school hours or be self employed.
Any thoughts and advice very much appreciated as currently feeling bogged down by the choice (or perceived lack of!). Thanks so much xx
