Help! Please motivate me

I started an intensive MSc. last year and was going well. I fell ill over Christmas and it affected my grades. Been a rough few months since Jan. I have to get a bone marrow biopsy done to determine treatment options.
I cannot complete my Thesis so will be exiting with a level 9 post grad diploma. I have one deferred assignment to submit by Friday. I'm so down with how things have turned out. Got my results yesterday and I'm averaging 65% overall. I'm so down and worried that this assignment will bring down my grades. I cannot motivate myself anymore.

@VladimirVsVolodymyr how are you doing? My first thought is can you defer for a year on medical grounds? Sounds like you have really been unwell and don't need this stress.

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 22/06/2024 20:42

@Turkeyhen thanks so much for your reply. I'm not great but just trying to get by. I was told by the exams/fees office that due to funding, I can either exit with a Diploma, and come back to complete the thesis but I will have to self fund (approx €3k I think). So I feel quite pressured for the assignment to be of good quality as I don't want to get a 2:2.

On the plus side, I was sent an email from the exams office telling me that I can defer my Thesis to submit by the end of November, which looks doable. I will follow up on Monday and find out.

I've had a pep talk with myself and hope to dedicate 3 hours morning and evening for the next 4 days to getting this done (approx 3k words). I'm off work for another week and kids are finished school on Friday, currently my toddler goes to the childminder 3 days.
Does that sound doable?
Thanks again for replying, it means a lot to me.

That's good news about the option to submit your thesis in November, so you don't have to settle for the diploma after all? Has this given you a bit of extra motivation for this assignment? You've worked out a schedule to get it done by Friday, so I reckon just grit your teeth and absolutely go for it. Think how happy you'll be when it's done, and how proud of yourself for doing it under such difficult circumstances (not only what sounds like quite a serious and scary illness but with young children to care for as well). Cheering you on over the ether!

@Turkeyhen the email said it depends on my supervisor having any supervision hours left. I will find out about the fees on Monday, so yes I could potentially graduate with a masters after all.
My Thesis is related to my job so I need to be at work to get the data. So far I have written 600 words out of 3000 (intro).
Onwards and upwards 👆🏽 thanks so much for your reply, so daunting being back in academia after a decade. Have a great weekend.

@Turkeyhen just a quick thank you for your support. Assignment submitted 🙌 and I have the option to defer my thesis sun until Nov so no fees to pay! I have a couple of medical test and once they are out of the way I will make a plan for my Thesis. Thank you so much, I cannot believe this is out of the way.

That's brilliant news, bloody well done! Thanks for the update - I was wondering how you were getting on, but didn't want to disturb you by posting here Grin

Congrats 🥂

I'm struggling to get words on the page for a Masters essay today and landed here while procrastinating. I'm so glad you got yours submitted @VladimirVsVolodymyr it has given me fresh purpose to just crack on with it!

vladimirVsvolodymr · 15/08/2024 15:50

@NatureofSociety it is tough and there's no way around it but to crack on, you can do it!
I still have my thesis to submit, midway through my treatment. Will get onto that when I'm back to work next month. Let me know how you get on.

NatureofSociety · 04/09/2024 15:55

That's it done, and in on time and thankfully I remembered the header and page numbers just before the deadline! I've no idea what mark I'll get, but I think I covered it, and loved what I learned!
