Temporary pay cut / Civil Service Tax Specialist program

Wondering what people think about this.... It's not all about the money obviously but it's a big consideration.

I'm in the process of applying for the Civil Service Tax Specialist program, but if I were to be successful it would mean a pay cut compared to where I am now for the duration of the program (say 4 years) of approx. 5k/year. But on successful completion the annual salary would be c. 15k more than where I am now so it wouldn't take long to make back the loss.

Realistically I think my progression route where I am now is limites (have pretty much been told I can't get a permanent position at the next grade part time)... So I don't envisage my current salary increasing substantially over the next few years!

Anyone got thoughts? Anyone on the TSP program?

In the long term that sounds like the right decision.

Will they put you through your tax exams? Because if so that's valuable and would offset some of the temporary pay cut in terms of value of the package on offer.
