Hi all,

Looking for some advice please. I want to retrain as a teaching assistant.

I've looked into various online courses and I think I am decided on the following two courses with Learn Direct.

Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools RQF

Level 3 Certificate in the Principle of Special Needs Education RQF

Unfortunately my current job means I cant do a placement so I am unable to do the certificate or the diploma at the minute.

I am also going to re sit my maths Gcse in September through my local college.

In addition to the above I am also a Unit Helper for Girlguiding so I do have some experience of working with children of school age.

Does anyone have any advice on whether the courses would be good enough? I have checked and they are both on the OFQUAL register.

Thank you

The level 3 certificate is good enough as an entry qualification and would get you in
You can do the certificate or diploma when you have a job
Lots of people get a job as a teaching assistant and do the qualification afterwards
My advice is to conceive on getting maths and english. Good luck

Sorry i mistyped that
I meant the level 3 award is good enough for an entry qualification

Thank you so much for the reply. I have English but maths was never my strong point so it will be a challenge!

Gcse maths is challenging
Go for a level 2 functional skills which is much more practical. Good luck

Bumping as there must be millions of TAs amongst the MN readership.

In the school where I work, quite a few TAs started with no qualifications at all but a lot of volunteering experience. You might find that you can get a job and do some training in role using your guiding experience to help in the interview. Really depends on the job market in your area.

Functional skills in maths would be a good thing to explore.

Hi I am a teaching assistant (independent school). I did my level 3 as an apprenticeship with the school - I was 50 at the time! I didn’t have my maths so just did functional skills level 2.

Hi I am a teaching assistant too. I got my role as I had volunteering skills like you and a parent. Its a private senco school .All the jobs are starting to come out .
I would look around and read the job description and see if u can meet any of them and apply ..You never know until you try.
Agree with others to work on Maths and English.
