Anyone studied online with University of London?

Am considering an online degree. The obvious choose is OU, but I’m also looking at the University of London. Has anyone got any experience of any of their distance courses and would share their thoughts?

What’s your proposed subject, Beenhere?

Beenheresomanytimesbefore · 03/04/2022 16:16

Either data analytics, which ties in with my job and I know I’m good at, some previous study etc, or history, which is is totally irrelevant career wise but which really interests me. The sensible thing would be to do a bit of both through OU, but I quite like the idea of a more ‘set’ pathway. OU is almost too much choose if that makes sense.

Please disregard typos! Does not bode well for study 😂

For data analytics, are you considering undergraduate (offered by LSE) or post graduate study (offered by Goldsmiths)? I presume those are the courses you are looking at? I have no experience I am afraid, but there are lots of online degrees offered in this area. For example university of Glasgow offer a masters in Data analytics and Bath in Business Analytics. The Goldsmiths course has some reviews on the student room.

DH is currently studying an online course with University of London. He is not impressed. They offer very little support and he is currently awaiting exam results which he took more than 6 months ago!!!
May just be his course, but I’d look at other universities first.

@TellySavalashairbrush that’s useful info to bear in mind.

@MatureStudentToBeMaybe yes the undergraduate with LSE. I have studied at undergraduate level before (started a maths degree years and years ago) but didn’t finish so can’t do a masters. Although I have equites about an MSc at Portsmouth which they have said they may accept me on with my relevant work experience. So a few irons in the fire.

I’m also balking at the fees a bit. I’m not sure if I’d be entitled to a student loan as I had one back in the lates nineties (but again, didn’t finish my degree so I think I’m still entitled) - it’s just a huge decision. Argh.

As the other poster said UoL is pretty much a diy degree. You will be left to your own devices.

That’s difficult to cope with as a mature student, when there a lot of things going on in your life. So i would stay away from it.

Look at Futurelrarn, many universities are offering distance learning degrees now a days. Choose the one, where you ve the most live interaction with the instructors.

Good luck

I'm going to PM you.

If you go for data analytics can you ask your employer to at least part, if not fully, fund the degree, as it would be of relevance to your job?

goldencornflakes · 16/04/2022 09:32

I did an msc with them. It was ok but I had issues. For example, the results took forever. My dh is doing a Msc with a non online university and his is so much better but my course was cheaper so I suppose you get what you pay for ?

I've just finished and graduation emails are also proving a nightmare. I did two modules at the same time and found one tutor amazing and one rubbish so it could be that you end up with good quality or not. Best to look up your potential tutors and respective review imo.

goldencornflakes · 16/04/2022 09:33

Oh and I had to interact with other students as part of my Msc so we started a WhatsApp and so I wasn't completely alone so again I think it depends on what degree what tutor
