Personal Statement for MA

I am planning to apply for a Masters degree in Environmental Humanities. I did my first degree 30 years ago in Environmental Science at the same institution as I am applying to. I always intended to do a Masters after my first degree but instead I did a PGCE and after working in education for a few years (not teaching but I worked with schools) I went into working for local government in the field of Information Management. I want to do the degree mainly for my own sense of achievement though if it opens new career opportunities that's great. I would be doing it p-t whilst working. I would welcome any advice on what I should say or not say in my personal statement on the application form. Thanks

Say exactly that! Explain how your decision have lead to you being here at this point, and how excited you are etc be studying at the place you first loved 30 years ago. Good luck!

Yup!

You’re the one with all the information.

You need to say more than ‘sense of achievement’. What do you want to achieve? Promotion? New responsibilities? To create new processes?

And what can you bring to this study? Commitment? Knowledge gained through previous work? Unique experience?

Have you read through some other threads? They may give you some idea of how to approach things.

Also! Have you actually spoken to any relevant staff at the institution? That’s the most useful thing you can do before applying. They’ll ask you questions - your answers constitute your Personal Statement.

I also think you should look at other institutions. For comparison. And also to avoid looking blindly sentimental.
