Low-carb diets

Anyone else about to start low carbing?

I have low carbed in the past, and found it to be a successful way of losing weight, but then slipped back to my old habits and have been piling weight on lately (I’m sure being in peri isn’t helping either).

I’ve just got back from my holiday and for the first time ever I didn’t feel comfortable in my swimwear. I also had a randomly selected blood pressure test last week and my blood pressure is sky high. I have to go back to the pharmacy on Tuesday and wear a monitor for 24 hours. I’ve read that the Mediterranean diet can help with blood pressure, so between that and my expanding waistline, now is the time to get back on the low carb horse.

Also going to start exercising again, starting with C25K. My life was naturally a lot more physical until about May, so didn’t really feel the need to do much exercise, but a summer of being less active is taking its toll.

Anyone care to join a new support thread? My personal goal is to lose at least a stone between now and Christmas.

Yes I'm starting Tuesday. I'm 38, prediabetic and weigh 14 stone at only 5'2". Feel really awful and slimming world wasn't working for me and too carb heavy.

I'm on day 6 of keto. To be honest it's the first time I've made it through any diet past about 2 days, so feeling quite pleased with myself so far. I have almost 40lbs to drop. I'm sick of being so flabby and invisible.

Welcome aboard! I haven’t weighed myself yet, will do that today. Have you lost any weight yet @Valhalla17? I’m not looking forward to the carb/sugar withdrawals. At a guess I have about 1.5 stones to lose to get to my ideal weight, it’s all around my middle though which I know is the worst place health-wise.

Yes mine is the same @VeryGoodVeryNice with most of it being around the middle. It really needs to go! I weighed myself this morning as its day 7 for me and im 7lbs down. I appreciate thats water weight in the first week or two, but a loss on the scale is still a loss!

I went swimming this morning at 8am and then had another coffee, fried eggs/couple of lamb sausages. Roast chicken later with some spinach and broccoli.

On the carb withdrawals, I've been fine mostly this week....the only hard thing was watching ds eat a lovely blueberry muffin yesterday. I made sure I grabbed some pistachios instead to distract me! I'm also having 1-2 Phizz hydration tablets, to keep my electrolytes up. I have one of those if I need a bit of a boost. I think it helps.

That’s great, half a stone in a week, water weight or not! I’ve had a very lazy Sunday so far as I went away for the night with my bf last night, I managed to resist Burger King, Greggs and Subway which were the options next to where we were staying, and came home and had a big bowl of berries and Greek yogurt with chia seeds. I’m vegetarian which makes low carbing a bit trickier, especially as I kind of have to be in the mood for eggs and often I’m not. Had a paneer masala with cauliflower rice last night which was really nice.

I’m planning on starting C25K this afternoon. The hydration tablets are a good idea, energy levels are one thing I’ve struggled with when I’ve low carbed in the past.

I'm following Fast800 and almost finished my second week. In the first week I lost 7lbs - that's the most I have ever lost in a week.

Nearing the end of my second week and I have lost 2 inches from my waist but will weigh myself tomorrow.

Its really making me think about what I eat. No processed foods, bread, pasta, rice, sugar, alcohol etc. to be honest I haven't really missed them as I have been full after meals.

What does paneer taste like? I've never eaten it but it is features in some of the recipes on my meal plan.

That’s amazing @lostparcel! Well done, hopefully I will have similar results. Paneer is lovely, it’s not as squeaky as halloumi, it doesn’t have a particularly strong taste but you fry it with spices before adding it to the curry.

I’m battling with my Fitbit which I haven’t used for well over a year and now doesn’t want to charge :(

Thank you. I'll pick some up next time I'm at the supermarket 😁

@VeryGoodVeryNice that's a shame about your Fitbit. Hopefully it will start working soon. 🤞🏻

Fitbit working! Turns out I was using the charger cable for my old Fitbit 🤣. Also just synced my Fitbit scales with the app and weighed myself…and I’m 10 st 13 which is the heaviest I’ve been since losing pregnancy weight (13 years ago!). Which is depressing but also the kick up the bum I need.

Going to attempt a run with the pup now.

Good luck to @sunflowerandivy with starting today.

I weighed myself today (probably shouldn’t have but couldn’t help it) and I’m 3lbs lighter than Sunday, which is encouraging. Haven’t folded yet, although I did have a small glass of wine last night (normally I’d drink cider so I’m trying!). I have to go and get a blood pressure monitor fitted this afternoon for 24 hours, dreading tonight as it takes readings every half an hour and it’s going to be hard to sleep through having my arm squeezed.

When I had mine done @VeryGoodVeryNice it switched automatically to once an hour at night, which was more bearable

That’s good to know @BIWI.

Going for another run this afternoon (run 2 of c25k) so they’ll probably call an ambulance for me straight away when they get the readings tomorrow 🤣

Hi All,

I've started low carbing this week due to a Polycystic Ovaries diagnosis and TTC
:(
I'm only on day 3 so far, and struggling to keep my cals below 1800 and eat more fat. I have about 5 stone to lose to get to my goal of 9 stone which is what is "normal" for my height.

Does everyone else calorie count when doing low carb or just count carbs?

Report
BIWI · 01/09/2023 16:58

Generally speaking, we don't count calories - certainly we don't on Bootcamp - although there may be some plans that ask you to do that.

If you have PCOS, low carbing is a good approach, so I'd just focus on the carbs for now and see how you go. (It is important to eat the fat)

@Butterflywings2 I'm 14 stone and need to lose 5 stone too as 5'2". I am not counting calories, just cutting carbs

Thanks for the replies 😊😊

I've calculated my macros on the Carb Manager app, which obviously gives me a calorie target, and I'm finding it hard to eat the amount of fat required and stay within the target calories.

I think I'll ditch the calories for now whilst I'm getting used to the diet and see how I go, thanks for the advice! Everything I google seems to be conflicting advice which is frustrating.

How's everyone getting along?

@Butterflywings2 I’m getting on ok, started properly on Saturday night last weekend (random time to start I know but I’d been shopping that day and only had low carb stuff in!), and I’ve lost just over half a stone this week. I haven’t cheated apart from two occasions where I had social events so did drink, 3 glasses of wine the first time, I don’t normally drink wine but it’s lower carbs so I did. Felt like I’d been beaten over the head when I woke up the next day though so the second time I went out last night I stuck to cider which is what I usually drink. So pretty chuffed to have lost half a stone despite all that, there have been times when the sugar/carb cravings have been intense but I’ve managed to resist, hopefully that will get easier.

I definitely have a flatter stomach and clothes are fitting better, the love handles are the issue now!

Wow 7lbs! That's amazing well done!

My batteries in my weighing scales recently died, so got some new ones coming today, looking forward to getting on the scales for the first time in a long while as I definitely feel lighter.
My sugar cravings aren't too bad at the mo, but I was doing a low sugar diet before this (still eating carbs but no naughty sugars such as ice cream and chocolate which are my nemisis) so I'm hoping my body is a little bit used to it already.

Aw I love a cider, luckily I love wine too so can still have the odd glass or two at the weekend.

I’ve been weighing myself every day which probably isn’t a good idea but I have new scales which sync to my Fitbit so it’s my new toy 🤣. Was disappointed when I was a pound heavier on Thursday but somehow then was 4lbs lighter the next day 🤷‍♀️. As a PP said a lot of it is probably water weight but it’s still spurring me on to keep going.

Anyone else about to start low carbing?

Thats amazing, definitely motivation seeing those lbs come off and makes it all worth it

I weighed this morning and I'm 10lbs down from my weight 2 months ago. Not sure what I was just before starting keto as my scales were dead but I'm sure most of it was from this week as I was eating total crap the month before 🙌🙌
