Keto not losing weight

summerfinn · 03/04/2023 08:55

I started keto almost a month ago this weekend and lost 3.7kg so far. But have weighed myself this morning and stayed the same weight despite sticking to keto. I snack on nuts and have some sugar free chocolate every now and then. Then just breakfast and dinner. Why have I stayed the same weight this week and why am I not losing faster, some days I don't even snack 😭 i haven't exercised since starting because I have been sick with one thing or another thanks to my lovely toddler and his nursery germs🙈

I'm so discouraged this diet isn't easy for me as I'm a huge carb lover and to see the scales stay the same this week is heart breaking. Advice please before I go mad.

Remember weightloss isn't linear, there are peaks and troughs

I did a spin class and Pilates this morning so hopefully getting back to exercising will help speed things up. I'm 5ft 9 and in between a size 14 /16 my goal is a size ten. It's harder at 36 to lose weight. I'm the biggest I ever was . I feel miserable. Having two kids really changed my body. My last ds is three and I'm still trying to get my body back 😭

Weeks 3 and 4 are notorious for weight not shifting, or even increasing on low carb diets. Keep going, and you should start to see downward movement again soon.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water!

2nd to the water! Gallons of the stuff, all day.

Oh really I didn't do that. That's all I drink is water. I could have cried when I stepped on the scales this morning. It's so hard to see the scales the same. Should I see a big weight loss again over the next couple of weeks? Is my body thinking it's not getting fed enough so holding onto fat?

3.7kg loss in 4 weeks is loads. Your expectations are unrealistic.

That's almost 1kg per week, which is a significant deficit in calorie intake. Any greater weight loss than that is only really possible for people with a very large amount of weight to lose and isn't usually sustained past the first few weeks.
the mistake you're making is to see weight loss as linear. It doesn't move in predictable ways. You've lost a lot of weight over 4 weeks, don't look at each week separately.

Look up set point theory. This might be why you've had a plateau

Bubbles254 · 08/05/2023 20:26

Weight loss generally plateaus after you have lot 5%-10% of your body weight. The plateau can be lenghty, I have read it can be as long as 8 to 10 weeks. Mine plateaued for 3 weeks and I am now having another 2+ week plateau 4 months in.

Are you counting calories? Still easy to overeat on keto (look at the calories in double cream and e.g. pork belly!). Plus nuts are super high calorie too.

It's just one week. It's really not unusual. Think about making changes if it goes on and on, but really, what's a week?
