Keto - I need the replacement stuff, anything!

So looking to start keto joined a few Facebook groups which are all purist/no anything that isn’t real food. I get that but for me to start or stay at it, I might need the odd cake/bread/rice replacement and it’s more likely I’ll stick at it and go “pure”.

So hit me with any products you’ve found useful as the groups I’ve seen just delete such requests. I’ve seen konjack type rice which if you wash the fish smell are ok? Any bread or pizza base replacements. Looked into low dough but saw they no longer trade. Any microwave mug cake type things? Or cake mixes? Or pasta? Looking to eat mainly salad and clean keto but think knowing I have these options in the cupboard if needed will keep me on track rather than quitting for the real thing.

Or pudding suggestions. Really hoping to see the health benefits.

Bump so I don’t eat the sugar…..

almond flour makes a good mug cake. I make soda bread, pastry etc using FiberFlour which is great, high fibre and low carb. I don’t like any of the sugar substitutes though.

WashableVelvet · 25/01/2023 23:04

And a relative makes gnocchi from ‘fathead’ dough but I found it too processed in taste.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 25/01/2023 23:06

You want seriouslylowcarb.com/

Bread, bread roll, crackers, pizzas...I even got some low carb hot cross buns from them.

lilyfire · 25/01/2023 23:08

Seriously Low Carb does really good bread rolls and good loaves - plus quite a lot of other stuff including hot cross buns.
I get 100 % cocoa chocolate from
Montezuma as well.

I regularly make:

Lemon drizzle cake
Chocolate chip cookies
Low carb bread
Cheese and almond muffins
Seeded crackers

My favourite swaps are:

Shredded lettuce for fajita salad
Cabbage for bolognaise (although mushrooms and courgette sliced also work well)
Cauliflower rice
Cauliflower and swede mash
Courgette chips
Celeriac chips (I'm not convinced but keep trying)
Halloumi chips
Spreading butter on cheese slices using cucumber slices to make cheese 'sandwiches'

You generally have to do a LOT of prep yourself though eg I made 2 lemon drizzles then cut and froze 20 slices.

Handsnotwands · 26/01/2023 00:29

Where do you get your recipes Fusion? that all sounds amazing

I’ve got to say, after two years of keto I’ve pretty much given up trying to find substitute things as most are pretty minging

greeek yoghurt with a few frozen raspberries is about as close to a sweet treat I get 😞

Aldi do a lovely protein chocolate mousse, 10g carbs, I eat half one day and half the next.
They also do a pasta replacement, not konjac, on special offers, so I buy a load when they have them in stock.
I use coconut flour, cocoa powder, eggs and stevia to make mug cakes.
Cauli rice, not the best, but mix it all in and it tastes fine.
Sainsburys do a no added sugar chocolate bar, milk and plain.
Warburton do a small brown loaf, 9g carbs per slice, I have toast for breakfast.
I've been low carbing for 15 years, know just about every replacement going.
I'll add more when I'm more awake!

Mum97540 · 26/01/2023 01:10

Almond flour makes nice bread. There are a fair few recipes out there.

sashh · 26/01/2023 01:36

Not a substitute but Sainsbury's do salted chickpeas that are almost, well a bit like crisps, they are quite nice.

I'm low carbing so aiming for <20g carb a meal. So I can have 3 frozen potato croquettes, 1/2 a pack or Iceland spring rolls (Duck) or three Yo gyozas.

Obviously that's just the carb part of the meal. i'll have a stir fry with the gyozas.

HallwayDoor · 27/01/2023 19:50

Thanks all
I’ve bought some random konjac stuff from Amazon so hoping that will be ok.
Will look at seriously low carb thanks @lilyfire amd @MadameSzyszkoBohusz We need to have GF for a coeliac as well and noticed some of the low carb stuff still has gluten in it.
What I really want to find is a good pizza base for occasion treats i think. A mug cake and a pizza base and I think I can live on salads and stir fries and no bread I think.

Fathead pizza
I use this recipe for pizza dough, easy and tasty. I don't add salt, though.

TheFlis12345 · 23/02/2023 11:38

Slim Pasta is an expensive but good alternative, Holland and Barrett sell it but it’s expensive so we stock up when it is on offer.

LivLife bread is the best I have found, it’s £2 a loaf from Waitrose and only 3.4g of carb per slice.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/02/2023 11:38

a sachet of sugar free jelly mixed with half double cream and half cream cheese. It's basically cheesecake without the biscuit base.

talknomore · 24/02/2023 06:41

@Porkchops22 this one? It has 52g of carbs per 100g
www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/large-bar-chocolate/sainsburys-no-added-sugar-milk-chocolate-100g

boygirlmom · 26/02/2023 10:08

'Sugar free Londoner' blog has some nice keto recipes

For bread 'hi lo bread' from Sainsbury's or Ocado hits the spot

If you can't get that, then kingsmill wholemeal no crust bread only has 6.1g of net carbs

I have to have some bread so they're my go to.

Also remember you can pretty much What anything on keto you just can't go above the daily net carb limit you set yourself.

For me starting out at 20g net carbs then once carb adjusted 30-50g is what I can get away with dependent on if I'm exercising those days.

Enjoy the journey. It's worth it.

Porkchops22 · 26/02/2023 13:35

talknomore · 24/02/2023 06:41

Yes, that's the one. You deduct the polyols from the total though, so it's around 12g of carbs for 100g.

Good shout about polyols. Unfortunately they don't agree with me 😞

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 26/02/2023 18:40

"Eat Water" rice and pasta are the most palatable of the konjac offerings.

I have a standing subscribe option on their website, but they also sell on Amazon.

I even make sushi with the rice.

You need to rinse really well and season the hell out of it.

TheExistentialistCafé · 26/02/2023 18:47

But isn't dirty keto kind of ruining the point?
After all, the reason low carb works, is because one stops eating processed stuff, and starts eating fresh food, homemade food.
