Low carb pregnancy

I love low carb. I’ve been eating this way since March last year and I am 6 stone lighter.

I’m 5 weeks pregnant and I would like to continue eating low carb but I’ve been scared by experiences of a couple of other women I know who have been read the riot act by midwives when ketones show in their urine.

I’ve looked at the research myself and I am happy to continue. To be honest, I can’t see how adding a couple of potatoes to my dinner will make me any healthier.

This is all academic by the way - I’ve Carried two pregnancies to term and lost 4 stone each time as I could bearly hold down water for the whole 9 months.

Although that’s part of the reason I’m continuing low carb - I’ve read research to suggest that it helps with sickness as you don’t have the insulin highs lows.

Does anyone have any thoughts on it?

Lots of women in the ketogenic community eat low carb through pregnancy. I personally couldn't. I craved cheese and ham toasties and I ended up fully back on carbs/sugar. Now paying the price having gained a huge amount in pregnancy and just getting back on low carb. Have a look at the ketogenic forum, diet doctor and I'm pretty sure there's a 2 keto dudes podcast episode about pregnancy. All will give you the information you need to rebut any comments about it being an issue. Good luck.

Thank you I will have more of a dig on the internet.

I am still massively overweight despite having lost 6 stone so I don’t intend to gain in pregnancy as I’m having my 3rd c section so much higher risks - the fear is stronger than I think any craving would be.
