Hello fellow dieters,

I'm the last I have done atkins but if I'm being honest it involved alot of not much eating tbh combined with very low carbs and as usual I always put the weight on after... I've put alot of weight on again and I really need to lose about 20 kg which I hope to do by summer!

I have itp (low platelets) and the doctor mentioned that the keto diet is good for this condition and will also help me to lose weight. Please could you explain the difference of atkins vs keto to me and where did you get your information from? What websites would you recommend for information for keto diet and recipes? There's a few sites online but alot charge for it and I'm not really sure which one is actually good. I really would like to just start for a healthier lifestyle, lose some weight and balance my platelets! I love my carbs but I can do the low carb once I set my mind to it...

Also, would love to hear success stories, they're always so motivating! What exercises did you combine your diet with if any at all? Would like to get moving, gym is hard to get to with a 2 year old but anything I can do at home would be great!!

Really would like some advice on how to start with this, I feel abit lost at the moment... TIA

I don’t know too much about Atkins I’m afraid, but mid November last year my doctor recommended I try the Keto diet as I was just inside the obese bmi range and have pcos which isn’t a good combination. I was starting to show signs of diabetes. I started immediately. My meals mostly consist of protein (a palm sized amount) with vegetables (leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, mange tout, salad leaves etc) and lots of seasoning and spice as that suits my taste. I snack on nuts or strawberries and raspberries. I don’t add a tonne of fats as that’s not necessary but I do incorporate good fats like olive oil or coconut oil. I have learned to love the avocado! And I have made some nice cake style things with almond flour, coconut flour and erythritol (a birch tree derived sweetener with no carbs or calories) in moderation. The diet is not so convenient for quick fixes and grabbing lunch on the go but eating out in restaurants has been fine and I’ve found the whole thing relatively easy.

In the 3 months, I have lost 3 stones and am about half a stone from being back in the healthy weight bmi bracket. I still want to lose another 3 stone to get back to the weight I was when I got married but I already feel so much better and I have pretty much reversed a lot of the symptoms I had when I went to the doctors- my acid reflux is gone and my periods are more regular and less painful.

I hope my experience helps!

Like the PP, I don’t know the difference between Atkins and Keto andmy doctor recommended the Keto diet for weight loss. Only recently started and lost a few kilos but not as much as I had hoped. Might have something to do with cheating with soft drinks and chocolate!

The website dietdoctor.com is quite useful and has some interesting explanations. You might find the info you want there.
