Don't you feel hungry on a low carb diet?

I have been trying to do 5:2 diet for about 6 weeks. It has worked in a way as I've lost about 7 lbs but I spend all my time thinking about food. And feel quite out of control with hunger. And that leads to stuffing myself. I'm sure I've read that hunger goes away if you low carb properly - is that right? I'm thinking of swapping Confused.

Eat 20 and under net grams carbs a day and after week 1-2 your not hunger it’s weird honestly I never thought I’d have that feeling
I’ve done all weightloss plans but I can go 24 hours and not eat
I usually find I start feeling a bit sick as not eaten

You do need to research macros it helps to get the right fat carb and protein goals right
I’d also watch calories if it’s for weightloss some day don’t eat high fat but I personally won’t kose weight not tracking all I eat and drink

www.ketogains.com is great look for the calculator

Diet doctor is good

Ruled.me is great also

Research learn and make an Instagram account

Keto is the best when it comes to losing hunger :)

You still get hungry, just not like you used to. You can go for long periods not hungry at all. I suspect it's to do with the fact you no longer have insulin spikes, so you don't feel the need to eat, unless you actually are hungry.

OrangeCarpet · 23/03/2018 14:36

Yes rarely hungry once you get going on it. It’s quite amazing. You do have to keep your fat and protein up to make it work.

megletthesecond · 23/03/2018 14:38

I didn't. It was weird.
Had to do it for a couple of weeks for IBS (i was already slim). I didn't know what to do with my time because I didn't need to eat so much.

I've been doing the blood sugar diet for the past 8 weeks.
Can honestly say I've felt hungry almost every waking minute.
But I have lost 12kgs, so there you go.

DianaT1969 · 03/06/2018 04:30

The blood sugar diet is only 800 calories per day. Fairly drastic as it's intended goal was to prevent diabetes in people close to developing it.
On a keto, or low carb diet, you can lose weight without restricting calories that much. In fact, many people don't monitor calories at all. Drinking lots of water is important and increasing good fats is psychologically hard, as we've been conditioned not to eat fat.

I'm on day 5 and I haven't felt hungry at all. It's all the fat that keeps the hunger at bay. I'm actually looking forward to adding intermittent fasting, something I never could have done before.

I don’t weigh any food whilst I’m doing a Keto diet.
I eat lots of good fats. Less Protein and a very small amount of carbs in the form of vegetables grown above ground)
I have a little very dark chocolate every day.
I’ve lost loads of inches and 11 lbs so far.
I’m never starving and can easily fast 14 hrs+ most nights.
I drink some alcohol most weekends but I will be hungrier the next day so have to be aware of that.
I was a bread addict and now I really don’t care about it anymore.

I would love fish and chips though but it’s not worth it.

The reason you don't get hungry on a low carb diet is that the key hormones (insulin, grehlin and leptin) are kept in balance. It's hormones that regulate our hunger, rather than having an empty stomach.

Here in the Western world, we very, very, very rarely experience hunger because we have empty stomachs!

On top of this, you're eating more fat and protein and this is very satiating.

So you will get hungry, but only when it's coming to meal times - and sometimes even then you won't be hungry. I was amazed when this first happened to me - and sometimes I even forgot to eat. This never happened when I was following a low calorie or low fat diet.

smackbangwhollop · 12/01/2019 22:32

I eat High fat low carb medium protein and I'm NEVER hungry. So much so I can easily go 6- 20 hours between meals. As the controls my insulin levels my weight loss is steady and easy.

merrykate · 20/01/2019 11:52

The high fat content keeps you feeling full. I can get by on about one meal a day now without any hunger or cravings.

Pipsnips · 21/01/2019 20:08

Yep, same here. I tend to eat dinner at around 6pm, then won't be at all hungry till around 1.30-2pm the next day. It's amazing! Before keto I would be constantly grazing , thinking about my next snack, trying not to snack or binging on whatever crap was to hand

Petalflowers · 21/01/2019 20:11

Yes, I sometimes feel hungry.

BIWI · 22/01/2019 16:52

It's not just about the high fat (or protein) keeping you full. It's also about keeping three key hormones in balance - insulin, leptin and grehlin. Those control your blood sugar levels, which also tell you that you're hungry.

@Petalflowers, if you're eating a low carb diet and still feeling hungry in between meals, then you're either not low carb enough, and/or you're not eating enough fat. Possibly also not drinking enough water.

KetoGirl · 06/02/2019 11:13

As BIWI already explained, once you are in ketosis (and have body fat) you won't feel hungry. That's why it is easy to combine keto and IF. However some people who use erythritol and/or stevia may keep having sugar cravings and that may make it much more difficult.
