Hangovers while on a low carb diet?! OUCH. Will it always be this way?

Im not totally low carbing yet. Ive reduced all carbs as per the rules but Im leaving in the sugar in my coffee (3 teaspoons a day) until next week because its my sons third birthday on sunday and we're going to the zoo for the day - I cant handle that with carb flu.

So I am not experiencing carb flu in any way (it helps that originally my diet was very low carb zero bread, zero rice, zero sweets/cake/chocolate).

My friend came round last night and we had some wine, we didnt even drink that much. Yet this morning I was sicky, shaking and felt absolutely horrendous. I knew it was low sugar because I experienced the hangover from hell when I low carbed last year.

A gulp of orange juice and a couple of jelly babies and I was right as rain.

Will hangovers always be horrendous while low carbing? I want to enjoy wine and occasionally get a bit tiddly without nearly dying the next day.

Its the only thing that puts me off this WOE. Which is frustrating because Im not low carbing to lose weight but to help several health issues that are bugging me.

I cannot drink as much as I used to before I was LC. I don't know if it's a common side effect or why it happens. I can still drink alcohol but my limits have changed.

I have to say it's not a problem I've experienced. Although there's part of me which wishes I had - might keep me off the wine Blush Grin

How much food had you eaten during the day? It may be that days when you know you're going to have a drink you need to up your carbs a little. ]

How about having some nuts to nibble on whilst you're drinking?

Thats what I was thinking BIWI, thank you.

I had eaten a small prawn and avacado salad for lunch and a small one for dinner.

Perhaps I need to be a bit more carb specific on days that are prior to wine nights and actually measure the carb in take.

I wondered if it was a common side effect, horrendous hangovers.

I think it depends on how many carbs you're consuming. If your carb intake is particularly low then you will be reliant on gluconeogenesis in the liver. Drinking a load of alcohol could limit gluconeogenesis while the alcohol is metabolised causing your blood sugar to drop so you get drunk faster and the hangover is worse. If that's the case then you might be able to up your carbs that day or while you're drinking. This is all theory though, I don't know for sure.
