Week 8 - Back-to-school Low Carb Bootcamp - the final week

Morning all

So we reach the last week. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun?! Today is day 50, of a total of 56 - remember the piece about it taking an average of 66 days to create a new habit? By now, therefore, hopefully we're all well into the swing of low carbing, and new habits are beginning to settle in. I hope that cravings for really carby foods - especially the sweet ones - have lessened (if not disappeared).

We have one more week before our final weigh-in next Monday. Let’s make it a good one! 😊

@LiesDoNotBecomeUs - I had posted a recipe for a low carb version of my mum's lasagne recipe on the meat recipe thread a while ago. It uses cottage cheese or ricotta mixed with beaten egg, mozzarella and Parmesan instead of a white sauce and sliced courgette rather than pasta sheets.

I'm actually thinking of making it this coming Sunday when I'll have ds and his girlfriend and my cousin and her partner over: I'll make it two thirds pasta and 1 third courgette (and do a small veggie one with quorn for ds' girlfriend.

For those that remember: my cousin and her partner are now house-sitting my dad's place (gives us a chance to connect with her as I didn't really know her as she's not lived in the UK for long Smile) and last night, we reinstated the tradition of alternate week's dinners at my dad's place (so for thr 1st night, I just ate what they'd cooked Wink.

No loss this week, but after the carnage of the weekend I'm not surprised. A few too many carbs and nowhere near enough water - my daughter would only sleep on me so, after the first night where I spent 3 hours bursting for the loo but unwilling to move her, I cut right back!

However, I would so love another loss for the last week.
B: FFGY w cream
L: chicken Mayo w salad
D: chicken veggie tray bake with feta

fruitstick · 30/10/2023 09:03

2lbs down this week, but that was all at the beginning of the week, so need to up my game for the final push this week.

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/10/2023 09:24

I seem to have miraculously lost half a stone overnight, but still feel very sluggish and tired so I know that's the carby stuff and alcohol.

Day into the city with DD today, she's normally quite difficult food wise but has expressed an interest in trying katsu so at least I'll be able to have stir fried veggies somewhere!

One thing that's struck me at various festivals, venues etc over the last few months is the complete lack of carb-free options...... Spitalfields market last week had such a brill array of cuisines on offer but all included bread/rice/noodles/potatoes of some sort.

Sympathy @RooRooCooChoo poorly children are not easy, and you feel so sorry for them too x

Hoping for a good dramafree week and then start life in the wild!!!!!

LadyBird1973 · 30/10/2023 09:43

Good morning all. Thank you for the new thread Biwi.
Am 2lb down this week, which makes up for no loss last week. Have been ill and at the same time, having work done in the house, so appetite has been reduced, which has helped!
Good luck to everyone yet to weigh in!

A loss at last! skips across the room. Only a pound but so hard won. Made my best swede substitute so far last night. Swede rosti. Microwave a chunk of swede for 5 mins. Let it cool, grate. Add grated cheese, finely sliced onion, seasoning and egg for binding. Half a beaten egg was enough for my single portion (small omelette pan sized). It was a bit sloppy so I added a sprinkling of ground almond to thicken. Fry in oil probably for about 10 minutes, turning once. It was really nice with my steak and I saved half to have today. This week will be a challenge, going away for a few days with Mum and sisters so lots of temptations to resist.

Loving the idea of being released into the wild at the end of this bootcamp 😀. As a long term bootcamper, I am still amazed by home done places just don't seem to have any non carb food on offer.

IF (intermittent fasting) has worked really well for me. Knowing that, so long as I drink plenty of water, I can go quite a long time indeed without eating, has made a big difference to my life.

In fact, one of the really interesting things about low carbing for me has been to recognise all the non hunger related reasons I have for eating. Obviously these include the time of day (breakfast time, lunch time etc) The really big one for me is when I'm a bit bored or at a loose end, or need to get on with something really don't find particularly interesting to do.

The thought that I really should eat something is never very far away when I'm bored and very often arrives tied up with ideas on what is reasonably close to hand and easy to turn to a meal or a snack.

It's so plausible as a reason for eat that it's the one that most often slips past my bootcamp radar

Id be interested to hear how 'hunger' and/or reasons to eat appear to everyone else

6 weeks in for me today.

I tried some random scales today and it seems that I've lost a stone so far!
🤗
Even allowing for differences in scales - this seems very positive and explains the light feeling on uphill routes during dog-walks recently.

(No regular weigh scales at home. I get too moved by the ups/downs of daily or weekly weighing and despite all common sense advice to myself - it can be a terrible disruption to weightloss.)

I'm too old to have expected fast results - so this is amazing.

Perhaps I'll look again in another 6 weeks :)

VeryGoodVeryNice · 30/10/2023 11:42

Just checking in on new thread. 2lbs off this week and now only a pesky 0.5lb to go until I’ll have lost a stone since I began at the end of august. determined to make that happen this week, so probs need to lay off the dark chocolate.

ZiggZagg · 30/10/2023 12:40

I did it! I reached the stone! 🙌🏻

Now to lose 2lb to get under 200lbs for the first time in 10years!

I was at this point during bootcamp in April 2021 and then my dad died and I ended up falling off and gaining 48lbs, fibro and diabetes.

Fibro is still there, 47lbs gone and no more diabetes!

FinallyHere · 30/10/2023 13:09

Gratters on your results

@ZiggZagg and @VeryGoodVeryNice

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 30/10/2023 13:15

I love Mondays at bootcamp. The news is so happy.
Well done everyone.

fruitstick · 30/10/2023 15:10

Good work everyone.

What a lovely start to the final week.

ChimneyPot · 30/10/2023 15:20

Thanks for the new thread @BIWIand congratulations to everyone on the losses.

I am travelling again this week and have no access to a scales so can’t weigh in.

Was very frustrated today, I was out for lunch nd ordered a Caesar Salad with no croutons, when it arrived the chicken was breaded!
I should have sent it back but didn’t want to delay everyone.

Almahart · 30/10/2023 19:14

No loss here but am fine with that.

Lunch was celeriac corned beef hash, fried until crispy with a fried egg on top

Dinner was this Creamy mustard pork recipe | BBC Good Food with celeriac mash and sprouts. Kids had air fryer chips and peas. We all really liked it

Creamy mustard pork recipe | BBC Good Food

A delicious recipe to add new dimensions of flavour to pork - also works well served with noodles, from BBC Good Food

Frumpyunicorn · 30/10/2023 21:23

Hi, another pound off for me today. I struggled today as I was in hospital with my dh and had to resort to snacks, lunch was cheese string, nuts and a keto bar. I had burger and salad tonight.

@FinallyHere I totally agree, I think a lot of my hunger was carb cravings due to tiredness but being bored or association with comfort were also huge factors. I used to get really irritable and sometimes even shaky if I went too long without food, today I managed at the hospital even though I was hungry it was not the same type of hunger if that makes sense.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 31/10/2023 08:01

Woo hoo 🎉 another pound off meaning I have lost a stone, and also means I am seeing a weight beginning with 9 rather than 10 for the first time in about 3 years.

TheOnlyMrsW · 31/10/2023 09:05

@LiesDoNotBecomeUs I love looking at the threads on a Monday too - even if I haven't lost it makes me realise that it can be done!

BIWI · 31/10/2023 09:09

That's great news @VeryGoodVeryNice! How are you feeling now?

OP posts:
bluesupermoon · 31/10/2023 14:07

Is anyone else here veggie and do you have any tips on eating out or at other people's houses please? I'm finding this aspect of LCHF quite challenging. Thank you!

BIWI · 31/10/2023 15:47

I guess it depends how well you know them @bluesupermoon. Surely people inviting you for a meal will know you're a veggie? So for them you need to explain what low carbing means for you. You may have to be pretty specific - rather than just talking about carbs, you may have to say 'that means no pasta/rice/bread/pastry/potatoes/sugar'. And you may even need to add 'yes, even brown pasta/rice/bread!'

As they may well be pretty horrified by that, if they have no idea about either vegetarian or low carb food, you may need to specify what you can eat - and to be on the really safe side, you may need to volunteer to bring your own food.

They should just be grateful you're not a vegan ... Grin
