low carbing if your cholesterol is tricky

truthwarrior17 · 11/06/2021 20:44

My cholesterol is over five unless I work hard at cutting out meat and dairy.

Which sucks if you're trying to low carb.

I'm genetically predisposed to diabetes and the my weight stays off so easily when I low carb. I want to do it for the rest of my life. But I also want to keep my cholesterol in the healthy range.

Any advice, lovely low carb mumsnet people?

I have high cholesterol and went to see an endocrinologist who said that it was probably high because I ate too many carbs. My problem is that I'm veggie so I'm really struggling to low carb but with low dairy and no meat. I also have young kids so non carb versions of rice etc don't quite cut it in my house and I can't face cooking 2 dinners. No advice but I feel your pain!

I have found fibre flour useful for flatbread and pIzza. That's basically all I have

Thanks @truthwarrior17 I'll look that up. Bar a diet of mainly just veggies and pulses I'm not sure what the answer is. I just try to do the best I can which in no way answers your question!

A low carb diet should help to lower your cholesterol levels overall - which would mean you shouldn't have to worry about meat and dairy!

Have you had your cholesterol number broken down? One overall number is meaningless - you need your LDL, HDL and non-HDL levels.

Thanks, @BIWI. Don't have my numbers to hand but I know my ldl (the bad one) was high. I definitely have a problem with cholesterol Sad

Have you been consistently low carbing? @truthwarrior17? Or have you been more 'dabbling'?

truthwarrior17 · 20/06/2021 21:26

'Dabbling' is probably a more accurate description if I'm being honest. I have two small kids (3 & 6) so find it hard to do it consistently, esp when life gets busy/stressful. I should probably try three months consistently, eating meat and dairy, and then get cholesterol checked. Thanks, @BIWI
