Low carb diet - glucose tolerance test for GD

Hi all, I'm a long term low-carber and pregnant. I was pretty strict and kept to keto but since being pregnant I've increased the carbs but still try to stay low.

I need to have a glucose tolerance test in a few weeks. Will my low-carb diet skew the results and should I increase my carb intake beforehand?

Any advice/ideas?

Not sure. @stuntnun might be able to advise.

If you want the glucose tolerance test to be accurate then you will need to increase your carb intake for three days before it. If you decide to do that then I suggest getting your carbs from potatoes and/or rice plus any higher carb fruits or veggies you fancy. I wouldn’t add back in any grains or sugar as they are more likely to derail you.

The other alternative is to just keep eating as you are. If the test does show gestational diabetes then they will likely just refer you to a dietitian for advice and may ask you to monitor your blood glucose levels. The downside of this is that a gestational diabetes diagnosis might make it harder for you to choose a home birth if that’s what you’re hoping for.

Thanks stunt nun. If I only have to carb for a few days beforehand then I will do that, will probably skew more towards rice and veg but I might treat myself to some proper chippy chips too one night Smile
