Hobbies and ways to spend child-free time as a lone parent

evening

I am relatively young - late 20s nearly 30.

I want some hobbies. My life has always been working and building a career, since me and DS father split I’ve fallen into a hole of spending my child free time out eating, drinking, socialising.

this is ok for so long but it’s wearing thin and I’m not enjoying it anymore.

I read, gym, walk. But I find none of this takes up a lot of time and I could be back home by midday on a Saturday with a very long afternoon and evening ahead. In some ways I do struggle with my own company and will usually find a friend to go out with rather than sitting in alone.

what hobbies to people have as lone parents? What do you do in your spare time? I’m not really into the whole charity shop work etc.

What did you like doing before you had children?

If you're sporty a team sport is a good way to have fun and meet people. There's usually a range of commitment levels so could work well around childcare.

Getting involved with a local theatre can be very rewarding. There are lots of options here. Performing if you're that way inclined, but if not the art/props costume department, writing/directing or even just ushering/working the box office. There are lots of courses in things like acting, improv, clowning, stand-up too.

If you're arty something like pottery (although this is quite expensive) or an art class or look to see if there are any community art projects on the go.

Volunteering is another one, doesn't need to be in a charity shop. There are loads of options...wildlife charity, cat/dog charity, arts charity, sports charity, guides/scouts etc

I cold water swim and then go for coffee with the other swimmers. Can you try doing something similar with people from your gym? Or go for walks with friends rather than on your own.

I belong to a book group which meets monthly for lunch. I like it and it gives my reading a purpose.

I am involved in charity work but not for a charity shop. Instead I'm a member of the committee and also do behind the scenes work sorting out paperwork. Not sure if that interests you. You could start giving blood if you live anywhere near a donation centre. If you donate plasma, you can do that once a fortnight.

I go to various community events that are held annually, to the museum and to art shows.

I do jigsaws. I want to get into crochet and cross stitch.

I love to cook so it's a good time to find recipes that the DC would not eat and give them a go.
