Trying to get back into work after having baby

I’m a lone parent and struggling to work out how to get back into work, my son is almost 2, I have no one that can help with childcare once I go back to work, so any job has to be within nursery hours. I can’t afford to pay upfront nursery fees and understands I can’t claim any costs back until I’m in work or get any free funding until I’m in work? I have no one to have him for interviews either and just feel so stuck, I had a phone call with UC last week and the lady basically said to wait until he’s 3 so I can get the universal funded hours regardless of if you’re working or not, but I’m really struggling financially on just UC. What jobs do other lone parents do, as I feel like not being flexible/being able to work evenings and weekends is going to be such a stumbling block when looking for work too, as I’ve only ever worked in retail/hospitality. Let alone how much time off I’m probably going to need once he starts to bring all the nursery bugs home, how does everyone manage this during probation periods at new jobs?

Do you have any specific qualifications and professions you want to stick to or is this a case of anything goes?

If you’re flexible, I’d look into small companies that are struggling to hire and therefore don’t mind adjusting your hours or hospitality that you can do during the daytime. My workplace seems to attract single parents (myself included) because of this.
