At 8 not sure I would leave them. Yesterday I left my nearly 11 year old for a couple of hours. She had a phone and just played on her laptop. She should have been at school but through up in the morning so couldn't go in, although she said she felt fine. I had had arrangements made for ages . I will leave her to go to the shop a few minutes away and she walks to and from school on her own but that has only been since September.

Mine was 8 or 9, I can't remember exactly.

At about that age for 15-20mins, building up to longer. I would start off small trips and very local and see how confident your child is. If you get a call when you are at the corner shop freaking out then you know they aren't ready yet and not to go any further or longer, but it's so dependent on the child.

From 8 years. We were in secure serviced apartments where the kids were always free to go in and out of each others flats, so it was pretty safe. I would leave her on stric t instructions not to answer the door and would never go further than across the road or 1/2 streets away
Oh, and she had a phone so we'd keep in touch. It still used to stress me out to be honest, but it would make things ridiculously easier when i was commuting between work and childcare full time. Took the pressure off needing to remember everything in my weekly shop, that sort of thing.
