Changing child's surname - how to do it?

Has anyone ever done this? Since we've split up i would like to add my surname to my son's surname (his dad's) to make it a double barrelled one. Or just have it as a middle name before the final name so it's in there.

Hoping also this will make it simpler to go on holiday abroad with him on my own too.

Any suggestions on how to do this? Ex is fine with this so won't have to go to a solicitor hopefully.

Only advice on line is to do via deed poll.

I did my 2 children's name changes via deed poll. We double barrelled to include my new married name along with their bio dads name.

Ex had to sign the forms confirming the change.
He also had to write a confirmation letter authoring the change (needed this also for passport).
Had to get a witness to confirm mine and children's identities, witnessed by a solicitor.
Then sent it off and the name change was back within 2 weeks.

@mummysmaison do you mind if I ask if it cost much to do it? Poor single mum and all that.

It was £36 per child for the deed poll. The solicitor only charged me £20 to witness the forms being signed which was very cheap, so worth ringing around to get prices.

Thank you. That's good to know.
