I am a single mum to 2 children and spend around £40 a week on groceries. My mum thinks this is far too much but I cant seem to spend less and still get enough for us all for the week, how much do you spend and do I spend too much?

DH and me spend around 55 a week, theres us two plus ds 9mo plus 2 dogs and 2 cats. Not sure how this compares but buy own brands of everything (apart from cornflakes!! yuk!) look out for the bargain sections with short dates and stick the stuff in the freezer.

I spent around £40 for me and one child! Don't think you are spending too much...

I spend up to £38 a week (I am budgeting Grin)
This is for me and 2 kids , This is also mainly (£20?)fruit and veg as I am veggie and kids don't eat much meat.I buy a lot from Reduced to clear and freeze it and in the past I have spent £17 as a lot was R-t-C!

I dont think you are spending too much at all. Farmfoods is a really good place to shop for frosen stuff - loads of great deals. I shop at Asda - again lots of great deals and try and cook from scratch as I find this is cheaper and you can freeze when you have made too much of anything. ALways buy in bulk when an offer is on too. Hope this helps.

Not too much at all. I spend about 100 for 2 adults and 2 kids. That doesnt include dog food or take away/eating out.

NotAnOtter · 28/05/2006 12:45

i think you sound frugal!

TwoToTango · 28/05/2006 13:26

Doesn't sound too much. I spend £65-£80 for 2 adults and 1 child. Think I may need to read a budgeting thread!

What the hell does your mother eat?! I think £40 a week on food for 3 of you is doing pretty well, I spend about £50. Do you meal-plan? I always find I spend less when I make the effort to plan meals in advance, ands still have plenty of food.
