I didnt know where to put this post so i thought being im a lone parent this might help:

Is it possible to find a listing of private landlords in my area? I only have the number of 1 from a friend & they have nothin avaliable at the moment. I am on the housing list but on the lowest band.

Ds has just gone through finding a private landlord and what he did was to check Gumtree every day, check the websites of all the local estate agents and search all local papers.I do recall that the local council held a list as well, might be worth checking yours to see if the have a list.

Although my memory's a bit fuzzy, it might be worth ringing up the council. Where I used to live (Brighton) the local authority had a 'landlord accreditation scheme', not sure if they still do or not though!! I think the idea was that they were landlords who (shock horror gasp) hadn't been convicted of harassing tenants or illegally evicting them in the past, got gas safety certificates, and I think there might have been extra criteria as well. Where I live now though, it's obviously a bit backwards because there's nothing like that... so bit hit and miss!

Otherwise, gumtree/ local papers/ lettings agents (if you have a well paid job or can get a guarantor) but do watch out for agents charges - some don't charge anything, but some have extortionate 'tenancy agreement charges' etc etc etc

Good luck!

Hi.
Unfortunatly I have moved a few times in the last 15 years and know that there is a local housing authority landlord accreditation scheme but must admit, can take a while to find what you are looking for as you have to go to each council seperatly and do a lot of click throughs. www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/Privaterenting/Repairsandstandards/DG_189202
Website privatelandlorddirectory.com has a section for tenants, you search available properties and then pay £1 to get private landlords direct details. Haven't used it myself but friend has and she was moved in within 2 weeks. Just looked on that site and they now do a landlord search service. Not used it but at least it's an option. Happy days :-) privatelandlorddirectory.com/private-tenants/
I have used gumtree before as well as put letters through doors of houses that looked like they were getting refurbished. I have got 2 houses that way. Note said something along lines of... Looking for a private rented 3 bed property. Please can you contact me if this property is available to rent. Name & Number.
Anyway, hope it helps and good luck
BB
