I hate both demonising and glorifying single parents.

Single parents are no different to married parents apart from not being in a relationship. Why does not being in a relationship automatically make you a better parent.

For what it's worth - I was a brilliant parent when I was married and I'm still a brilliant parent now i'm single, nothings changed in that respect.

A lot if us here have no other parent to rely on...... I was left with 4 dc and no contact whatsoever. £5 a week maintenance to be shared with 4 dc. Great

So nice if there is another parent around to take some strain. But no. All childcare, worry ( teens), education, house, finances, DIY. All shouldered by just ME!

It's very bloody different from being married!! Very!

There is a big difference between being a single parent where the dcs have contact and spend time with the NRP and being a single parent with no NRP around. Having to provide for everything, make every decision and never having a break. I'd love to have a NRP to share care of ds but that has never happened as ds's father refers to him as the 'non-aborted foetus'.

Not sad, just a fact of life. Ds is a brilliant sparky 7 yr old who so far is coping fantastically with just having me as his mum .

Notsosmugnow, I know not all are doing a great job but still they are doing the job of two people. and I thinking raising children is a job best suited to a team of people with one or MORE salaries behind them. DC should put things into a work context and he might GET it. If one half of a team leaves when they ahve already commited to a project, then do you demonise the half of the team that is trying their best to complete the project?! no of course not but that's what the media and the politicians do.

I agree that it would be nice if LPs were treated the same as 2 parent-families, but on the whole LPs are demonised by government and the tabloid media, so I'm all up up for some trumpet blowing.

damn some people most of us do not choose to be single parents it is hard work i myself one minuate (not fishing for sympathy) went to bed mortgage, husband, two incomes and woke up the next morgage, no husband, one income and struggling i just shut up and get on with it because of the children.

some arent.
but many are and most dont fit the stereotype!

when a male father soldier dies in afghanistan the daily mail doesnt write that the single mother left behind will now turn to drink and drugs and her children will be looters and rioters. why not? they single parents now?

it si about stereotypes - but making a new stereotype that single parents are somehow better than other parents is also wrong.

parents who care for thier kids and bring them up properly are brilliant whether they single, in a relationship or whatever.

lps have it harder yes - but some have enough money for nannies and the rest (princess diana, katie price) and get tonnes of time off...

some parents in a relationship are dealing with depression, illness, poverty etc in their partner and have a tough time too. they are also brilliant in the circumstances.
