Advice needed about finding a new place to live

This a is a bit boring sorry but I didn't know where else to put it.
I have recently split up with my partner. I left the home and have been living with my parents and our 2 children have spent most of the time with me. I need to start looking for somewhere else to live, ideally between my parents and ex as neither me nor the ex drive so there is an hour and a half travel time to drop off amnd pick up kids but I don't want to be too far from my family either.
Anyway, i'm on the mortgage of our old house and need to get off it I presume before being able to claim housing benefit? It was my ex's property before I moved there, i have only been on the mortgage a few months so don't want to drag it all out but apparently this will cost approx £400?!
How will i pay for a place to rent? I could save a deposit but if I need my first months rent in advance then i'm well and truly stuck.
I have never lived alone so i'm absolutely clueless as to what I need to be doing now, I feel like just giving up and going back to him as financially it would be so much easier andd the kids wouldn't have to change schools

err how old are you? that you never lived alone? why cant you learn to drive?

IAmBatman · 18/07/2010 22:58

Why is my age important?
I am learning to drive.
I have only ever lived with a flatmate from school before living with ex. She offered to arrange bills to come from her account, I gave her half when needed, I can't remember how much deposit was and whether rent is paid in advance.Hence me asking.
Whilst living with ex, he paid all bills and mortgage from his account.

hi - being named on your ex's mortgage wont stop you receiving hb/ct etc. would only be counted if any equity had been paid or was still owed.

as for still being named on the mortgage its worth checking your position with the lender. they like to have more than one person named in case they have to chase arrears - make sure you wont be held liable for the debt.

and £400 for what? i still get to see my ex's name on my mortgage statement once a year neither of us would even think of paying to have it removed - she was written out of everything when we divorced so no legal claim one way or the other.

i'd get in touch with the local council/ha about getting on the housing list - and go see about how and when to claim benefits - good luck with it all

Thats really helpful thanks being able to claim HB without paying out for mortgage change will be a huge load off my mind.
