Hi,

Hope Everyone is well.

Looking to move to London soon & got the option to Live in Acton (Near Central Station, just off the Hugh Street) or Streatham (5 min Walk from Streatham Hill Station). This would be for a Year until find somewhere to Buy long term.

Work from Home so commuting not an issue, more important is Safety, Amenities etc.

Thanks in advanced!

None of them.
Left London 15 years ago ( true Londoner - - born and bred and generations of family before me- so never just rocked up)

Not helpful I know.

I will get my coat but good luck. Horses for courses and all that.

Just left Acton because we couldn’t afford to buy a house there. Otherwise I wouldn’t have left. Absolutely loved living there and the transport links are extremely good - loads better than Streatham. You’re in easy reach of Elizabeth, Piccadilly, Central and Overground lines. Even with working from home that will be handy - it’s extremely quick to get about.
The area by Acton central station (Churchfield Road and Poets Corner) is lovely with a really community feel. There is a small shopping centre with a Lidl, Superdrug, Iceland, and a big Morrisons. Churchfield Road has independent coffee shops, some shops, pubs and wine bars. More coming all the time. Huge lovely park too and close proximity to Ealing which also has lots of green space and more shops.
Can you tell I loved it?!
I also never felt unsafe there (no more so than other area of London)

i wouldn’t pick either, does it really have to be one of them? If you can work from home I’d prefer somewhere more central and both those places feel quite suburban and if you’re not commuting into London it could feel a bit out the way.

Thank you for the input so far, appreciated. Bumping for more. Best.

acton is much nicer

biedrona · 30/11/2025 17:09

I lived there for 11 years

Inspiremeaholiday · 30/11/2025 17:12

I would do Acton over Streatham due to the transport links

BlackberrySky · 30/11/2025 17:15

Of the two, I would pick Acton, it's a nicer area generally. I find Streatham a bit gritty personally, but then I again I don't like Lambeth as a borough to live in. Have you visited either of them to get a feel for them? If you're WFH and transport links are less important, then you could look at places like Forest Hill or Crystal Palace as well.

MellowPinkDeer · 30/11/2025 17:18

Why would you live in London if you WFH? Makes no sense to me. Live somewhere nicer and cheaper!

CoolEagle9895 · 01/12/2025 01:01

Thank for Everyone's Replies. These Areas are Options due to Friend/Family Subletting for far less than London Average Prices, so is a no brainer.

Sould be good to get some further input as it’s proving a difficult decision. Have visited both Areas.

I grew up near Streatham but have lived in Acton for 20 years. Acton is a million times better mainly because of the transport links especially the Elizabeth Line. Churchfield road has a multitude of nice coffee shops and boutique shops.

Also close proximity to Ealing and Chiswick which both have loads of amenities.

Well I love Streatham 😬 But get what people are saying about transport links. At the moment (and I think for about the next year??) there's a huge amount of road works happening on Streatham High Road making bus journeys less convenient.

But there's a M and S Food hall, a Superdrug and lots of independent shops and cafes around. I find Streatham Hill to be as safe as any where else in London and some of the roads off the high road are lovely and surprisingly quiet.

JacquesHarlow · 25/12/2025 19:47

Interested in Streatham and great to see your comments @Motnight

Could I ask, do you think Streatham would be safe for teenage girls? I'm concerned about them walking around the shops etc and whether there's a lot of crime against the person.

23doorsdown · 25/12/2025 19:49

Depends what part of Streatham, the bit close to Balham puts the tube closer but other parts I don’t like. Acton is good links wise.

shivermetimbers77 · 25/12/2025 20:30

Acton for sure: much easier to get into town/
the Elizabeth line is amazingly quick and there’s also the tube. Streatham Hill is nice but you’re limited in terms of trains and buses.

Peonies12 · 25/12/2025 21:08

Acton has much better public transport. South London is generally rubbish for public transport

Motnight · 25/12/2025 21:37

@JacquesHarlow yes I do think that Streatham is safe for teenage girls in general. Lots of families live there. I'm talking specifically about the Streatham Hill area - there's bits around the Common which seem less safe to me.

Slimtoddy · 25/12/2025 21:55

Streatham is very handy depending on what part. Some parts very close to Tooting and Balham where there are tubes but I always prefer the rail service into Victoria - much quicker and more comfortable. Have neighbours who prefer the underground and can't understand my preference for the train. I can't understand their preference for the underground. Each to their own.

I used to live near Acton (Ealing) and much prefer Streatham.
