Cheap theatre tickets? Musical recommendations?

I am a very infrequent visitor to London but before kids we used to rock up at Leicester Square and see if you could get a cheap theatre ticket for that day. I'm wondering if that this still the case?

Looking online the prices seem so expensive and so many websites. Are there any hacks for getting a good deal on theatre tickets eg musicals etc. I'd like to take my son to London to see something like Frozen or Wicked (age 7), the old trick of seeing what you can get on the day may lead to disappointment with the kids?

Would welcome any recommendations of shows to see too. Thank you in advance 🙂

Have you looked on the Today Tix app?

I would recommend Matilda. One of my favourite musicals and I have seen many. Wicked is also excellent, but may be a bit scary for a 7 yo. Frozen very good for that age. The Lion King is also brilliant.

Frozen has closed 😭

Second TodayTix - you can get push notifications for on-the-day discounts depending on the shows you're interested in. You can also get discounts in advance on there for some shows - probably not wicked for a while as there's a lot of hype after the movie came out, but for others.

A bit late for you if you're planning a trip soon, but end of Aug/beginning of Sept Theres 'London theatre week' which gives discounted tickets for the next few months to book in advance. Useful to keep an eye on in the future :)

TKTS is online and still at the Leicester Square booth. We also sign up to likes of Love Theatre and See Tickets newsletters. Currently get sent offers on Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Back to the Future, Mrs Doubtfire etc. Next year Oliver and Hercules launch.

Kidweek is during August with kids free or half price with an adult.

Matilda or Lion King for a 7 yo. Wicked is fine but the other two are sensational.

KidsWeek (really all of August) is great and children go free.

You can book online on the day, but wouldn't recommend that at the weekend or school holidays.

Thank you all 🙏 that's some food for thought. I will have to have a look into Kids Week next year. Thank you again ☺️
