Advice on Areas in Hertfordshire

Good Afternoon All, I am looking for some advice please, we are looking to relocate to Hertfordshire but will initially be renting. Does anyone have any tips on areas to go to and also those to avoid. Thank you in advance, any assistance would be most grateful.

Maybe narrow it down a bit, what do you specifically want from an area?
Failing that Hertford is nice

Hertfordshire is HUGE. It's over 600 square miles.

What trainlines do you need? What is your budget? Will you need schools? Town, village, rural?

Hi Thanks for your replies, heres to hoping to narrow it down a bit. Trainlines not a problem but would like to be within a short drive (15 mins max) to good road links as my husband is self employed. Schools also not an issue either. Would like to be in a nice area with maybe a couple of amenities in walking distance, ie shop for essentials, bar, restaurant. My husband was originally from this area but hasnt lived there for many moons now. Will be renting initially until we get settled. Any tips would be most welcome. Thank you

15 mins from A1m/A10/M1 that's pretty huge area

You can basically take your pick from any town in Hertfordshire... :/

That's just some of the towns with good schools good amenities close to a major road...

Bishops Stortford. Just off the M11 and 10-15 mins to the M25, close to the airport. Good train and road links to London and Cambridge. Good schools.

OP, it would be really helpful if you could give some clues! Budget, do you need to find work? What areas does your DH work in? Do you have children? Any family or friends you'd like to be close or commutable to? Do you prefer older properties or new build estates?is your DH' work based at home (i.e. Does he need space for tools, great wifi etc). What are your key criteria?

Hi Gazelda, Hubbie will be working all over Hertfordshire and North London so good road links within 15 mins is important, I will be seeing if I can work locally, not sure yet but this is not as important. However,, a garage and driveway is a must as he likes to work on the car himself, garden is also a must for me so I can grow my own veg, fruit and herbs, doesnt have to be massive though. Schools not an issue as son older. I really love older style properties, but am also OK with new on an estate too. Ideally looking for end terrace, Semi or Detached for around 1500 a month to include Council Tax, good wifi would also be a must, Is this possible. Also, are there areas that I should avoid. Thanks for all your help.

You really need to narrow it down a bit

Where did he come from?

Nearish to M1 or A1M would be a start if you want north London ish

Anywhere other than Stevenage. Letchworth is very nice, beautiful town and nice people as is Hitchin. They're where I'd recommend

OP, it may be easier for you and for people replying if you were to say what research you've done and what areas you are considering. We can then give you the pros and cons of those areas.

Herts is huge and mostly benefits from good transport links. It is very difficult to advise with such vague criteria.

Does your DS work? What are his needs (assuming he lives with you)?

You need south Hertfordshir from your vague criteria. That's based on DH working in North London.

Look round St Albans, Potters Bar, Hertford, Broxbourne way

Hi All, I have been onto Rightmove and this is the reason I asked the question here because there was so many differing properties at differing prices. Ranging from 895 for Baldock, then around 1300 in Hemel Hemstead and more in Stevenage, Chobham, Hersham and Welwyn Garden City. As we dont know any of these areas it is difficult to know if these are good or bad places. (I mentioned before that my hubbie was from this area, but hasnt lived there for 30 years) We are going to spend the summer around these areas to get an idea so hopefully this will be good for us. Thank you to everyone it is greatly appreciated.

The problem is Hertfordshire is huge and well connected.

Your criteria is so vague it's really hard to narrow it down.

Think about the following ;
Max budget
How many bedrooms
What kind of house
How far away do you want to be from family (travel time/distance)

So for example if you wanted to be able to buy a 3 bed detached house for a maximum of £750k that is a 45 minute drive from X town.
Nice to have a rail station in area

That would narrow down your search.

Currently you've narrowed your choice down to the whole of Hertfordshire which is 600 square miles!

Where about in Hertfordshire live before, then perhaps work out from there do you want to be.

I grew up in Hemel Hempstead but wouldn't necessary want to live there now as it been far to many new housing estates been built in the last few year so now feel overcrowded.
