Hi, I'm near Henfield and looking for play sand for the new sandpit. Argos are offering 15kg bags for £3 (but about 12 bags needed). B&Q have a great deal but the only review says it's horrid quality. Any ideas?

We recently built our children a very big sand-pit in the garedn (slightly regretting it now though thanks to the sand that gets trodden into the house!). Because of the size of it I was looking to buy play-sand in bulk which is easier said than done. One company quoted me nearly £400 for the two tonnes we needed!! The cheapest playsand I could find was just over £200 for 2 tonnes. So I'm afraid that we eded up buying builders "silver sand" which is the finest quality building sand and it cost us just £30 for 2 tonnes!!!!!! That was partly thanks to a personal contact in the family, but even without the discount it was a fraction of the price of play-sand. Yes it's not perfect, there are a few small stones in it, but it's perfectly fine! So don't worry about buying "the best" and paying too much, after all when your kids play on a beach they find all sorts of things in the sand! And when we were kids no-one was marketing sand at exorbitant prices as 'play-sand'...it was just sand...and we all survived!

You're absolutely right. Thanks for that. I don't think I need 2 tonnes but I will look at silver sand.

I can't find silver sand on the B&Q website. Would this be OK?
