Moving to area this summer from abroad. Plan to send 12 year old DD to school in Haywards Heath and eldest DD wants to do IB at Varndean College. Is it impractical to commute to Brighton every day from Haywards Heath? do many kids do it? would it be better family life to live in Brighton and drive DD to Haywards Heath every day? Confused, so any help/advice greatly appreciated

I went to secondary school in Brighton (many moons ago)and a significant number in my year commuted from Mid Sussex (about 1/4), although can't remember exactly where Varndean is in relation to a station.

Not impractical at all and very common. All teens in Burgess Hill/Hassocks have to go to college somewhere and the 3 major colleges are Haywards Heath, Varndean (Preston Park station LIZS) or BHASVIC (Brighton Station). All involving train travel.

I did B/Hill to Bhasvic for 2 yrs and it wasn't a problem. Think of it another way, DD will have a season ticket for the train so when she starts wanting to meet her mates in Brighton for pubbing/clubbing you won't have to drive her down. "You have a train ticket - use it" was a popular saying by my dad
