Where to look for a private tutor?

Hi, I'm looking for a tutor for my son who is 9 in year 5, mostly for maths and english, would prefer someone to come to us rather than us to them and would prefer one-one teaching.
can anyone recommend anyone or suggest where to look to find one?
thanks
J

It sounds obvious but have you tried the Yellow Pages? Mainly I think it is done by word of mouth though. Could you talk to parents, particularly those in Year 6 as that is a popular year to tutor your child because of SATs, and ask if anyone is using someone?

I am the other end of the spectrum: a one-time teacher who would like to do a bit of tutoring. Unfortunately, I am not near enough to Bristol to offer my services to you.

Oh, forgot to add: the other approach - though you may not feel comfortable doing this if you feel it casts aspersions on the quality of teaching - is to ask the teachers in your son's school if any of them tutor. One of my colleagues used to tutor pupils from the school we taught in though not children who were currently in his class, of course.

No I thought asking at school might be a leetle bit tricky! but some do it...

Other parents are your best bet. Or other schools?

one of our neighbours does private tutoring. She's a qualified teacher, very bright and charming, and has looked after my boy in school hols. I was always amazed to hear all the stuff they'd done during the day! Let me know if you'd like more details.
