PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE

We are a local parent group 'Action4kids' which started a year ago when we and 217 parents received our school admission letters to discover we had not succeeded to get any of our three preferred schools.

For me personally along with another 9 children we also failed to get a sibling place! So when considering the council had 159 spare places in the city it seemed to not make sense.

These places are in fact on the edge of the city as far as Bevendean as all central primary schools are oversubscribed, families ended up scattered to the outskirts of the city away from friends from nursery and on long bus journeys.

Now in the news you have heard about extensions to Goldstone,Westdene and Queens Park which are all oversubscribed so very welcome and will create a total of 2755 places

IN 2011 THE COUNCILS OWN FIGURES FOR CHILDREN REGISTERED WITH LOCAL GP'S REQUIRING PLACES IS 2783 (THIS IS A MINIMUM FIGURE SO COULD EASILY GO HIGHER!!!) SO IF YOUR CHILD IS BORN BETWEEN 09/06 - 08/07 THEN YOU ARE FACED WITH A YEAR WHERE THERE WILL BE A MINUS OF AT LEAST 28 PLACES!! ALL SPARE PLACES WILL HAVE BEEN EXHAUSTED!

With no new school to be built anytime soon, you need to lobby your local councillor or mp, or email us [email protected] to join our action group or for tips.

Tell your friends at nursery the more people we have to fight this the better as primary places have now become a lottery!

Yes this is a reality that is only set to get worse as births keep rising. I read in 2009 (my dd was born 10/09) That the rise in new births was higher than it had been in years.
My baby is only 6 months old and i'm already concerned about the primary school situation.

PS i think Actin4Kids is already a registered charity for disabled children. Not sure if that matters.
