Where to move too?

Me and my boyfriend are looking at getting our own place in Colchester later this year but I have no idea whereabouts to go.

I was thinking that being near the town and the stations wuld be brilliant, but I should have a car by then so it's not essential to live by the town.

So where abouts is nice to live and what are the pros/cons? I've not seen much advertised apart from highwoods (incredibly cheap flats to rent there which is good!) or near North station (which is where I'm leaning to at the moment).

Not good?

Copford is fine. I think Sawyer just meant that there is someone who lives there.

My main bugbear is that you cannot really walk to the shops with small children in tow. There is a bus that goes to town, but as its just out of town you cannot get a rover ticket and it costs about £4 return. The station is not far from the main part of Copford, but I know there are flats closer to the station.

Oh right, I've seen the ones close to the station, there's the Rookeries that have places going often it seems, but they're too expensive for me! I'm still liking the Myland's area though I must admit

Stanway and Prettygate are quite nice too. Walking distance from town (just) and on a good bus route.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 27/01/2010 16:33

have they got shops to buy daily groceries in nearby?

Mung · 29/01/2010 17:25

Yes...in the centre of Prettygate there is a little Coop. Stanway has the larger Coop fiveways and some little shops dotted about.
Have you seen this site?

Mung · 29/01/2010 17:37

How about this one Just round the corner from Fiveways on Peartree Rd, near the bus route to town.

CardyMow · 31/01/2010 03:16

Myland is lovely . Good Secondary school as well...(if that's needed).

PorphyrophillicPixie · 07/02/2010 22:47

No schools needed for a good 6/7 years yet I hope!

I'm realising just how fussy I am at the moment. I'm finding faults in everything at the moment. Too small. Not enough rooms. Mangy looking. Too expensive. Too new. Etc etc. Maybe I should leave OH to do the flat-hunting once the time comes!

I'm looking for nursery work at the moment up that way so that will influence where I move too should I get it now :/ Any nurseries you know of to avoid working in? Or any outstanding ones that happen to have student places available at the moment?

Copford itself is just a main(ish) road into the Stanway end of Colchester with houses either side. Copford Green is a village, and is lovely. Both Copford and Marks Tey are much less busy than many of the other places mentioned. They are detached from the town centre whereas places like Myland and New town are very much attached. Really depends what you want, and obviously what budget will allow. An easy walk to Colchester North station comes with the added disadvantage of being permanently around horrendous traffic -that roundabaout/traffic light system between North Station and Asda and the road to Braiswick Not for the faint-hearted on a daily basis. I need to lay down for a full hour after getting through that in one piece!

I think the flats and houses at the rear of St Mary's carpark/Balkerne Hill look great. Very easy access to the shops and nightlife but quite self-contained and away from the hubbub.

Good afternoon dear,
you've commented on the Mumsnet forum about the Colchester area.
If you don't me asking a few questions about the area.

Well, we a bit of advice regarding a property located in Colchester.
we've seen a property in Barkstead road, Colchester CO4 0DL and we really like the property, but we are not sure about the area.

What is the area like?
Is the area safe?

Your kind assistance will be greatly appreciated

Thanks xx
