How do you earn money while staying at home

I have two little kids. The older one is attending a pre school in the afternoon and the younger one is staying at home. He is one year only. I would love to earn some money but do not know what I could do. To send the little one to a nursery would be like £40.00/day, then the older one is at the pre school for a few hours only. When he gets home he is already tired. I would love to do something from home or at weekends.
I was wondering whether I should attend a course (e.g. to improve my drawing skills) and then offer paid lessons. I can cook and bake but do not have special certificate for it. I can do cross stitching. In general I am good at creative tasks.
I have a university education but it does not help me now. So, I wonder what other mums/dads are doing when they also have to look after their children.

That's the rub, I love working from home but there are so very few genuine ways that don't involve selling something. I used to be a journalist working inhouse but the options are slim now (redundancies, huge competition with other freelancers, etc). I started doing some tutoring and even taught at an adult education centre (Holiday Italian), but am now moving to Cambridge and not sure if I will be able to do that. I love crafts too and for a short while I hoped to sell some stuff through etsy but didn't manage.

Have you thought of teaching at an adult education centre or somewhere where they offer craft classes?

Thanks for your suggestions Goldenpeach. May be I could do some voluntary work then find a paid job.
