I'm a mum and involved in a great local organisation: Home-start Leith and North Edinburgh. They recruit parent volunteers to provide support to local families with at least one child under five. It is a great way of using your own experience to help another family, as well as meeting new people and learning new skills. The training is organised at a time to suit parents and volunteering is very flexible, ususally about 2 hours per week or fortnight.
