Not to close TLA/Alderman Blaxhil but have it co-headed.

essexgel · 01/12/2008 10:32

Oh, no-one seems particularly interested...?

OP posts:
Sawyer64 · 01/12/2008 12:57

Guess most of the Colchester-ites have little DC's.

Might interest some of the teachers we have in our group though.

essexgel · 01/12/2008 13:43

My children are in primary but (trust me)! time whizzes by and it will come round sooner than you think!

OP posts:
Sawyer64 · 01/12/2008 17:28

I've got a DS in Senior School(different part of Colchester), and DD1 is at Primary,DD2 is 2.Yes it does whizz round.

Mung · 01/12/2008 20:24

I am interested, done my bit.

SparklyPrincess · 01/12/2008 22:02

Yes, we are interested!

mirandab · 02/12/2008 20:29

Yes done this too

JentlyDoesIt · 03/12/2008 14:49

Um, aren't they already co-headed by the chap who also runs Stanway??? TLA is my nearest secondary but as DS is 2, have got a while (yes, it does fly by though)

Sorry, might have missed something...

Mung · 03/12/2008 14:55

Mr Tippett is running TLA as well as Stanway at the moment. Not quite sure how he can do it really. Basically, he has a very good Senior Management Team at Stanway that are holding the fort whilst he is trying to sort TLA out in my opinion.

Anyway, read this. This is a bit of info for you. I got an info pack from the library in Stanway. Will probably have one in other libraries in the town.

essexgel · 04/12/2008 08:31

The consulation pack really pushes option 1. I believe Hanningfield has made his mind up to close TLA/Alderman Blaxhill. The children will be dispersed to other secondaries. I don't want my DC's secondary - where they will go in a few years - to get any bigger. To spend 100 million buidlding another school, knocking down 2 schools and taking them out of the commmunity - to me - seems ludicrous. Mr Tippett's proposal ticks all the boxes for me!

OP posts:
essexgel · 04/12/2008 10:06

BTW if you want to their is an online petition for option 4. www.stanway.essex.sch.uk/. sorry no good at links!

OP posts:
essexgel · 04/12/2008 10:07

There even!

OP posts:
Mung · 04/12/2008 14:38

How can they run one school on 3 sites? It really isn't a feasible option IMO. Schools are different and have their own individual ethos and culture. It really isn't possible to do it and I don't think Mr Tippett is up to it. I don't necessarily agree with a single academy being built, but Co-heading will ruin Stanway and wont necessarily improve TLA and AB.

Mung · 04/12/2008 14:41

Oh and in all honest how many teachers who were employed to work in Stanway are going to happily go and teach in TLA? I know someone who tried to escape TLA and the move was to Stanway, they aren't really going to want to go back there, are they?

essexgel · 04/12/2008 19:07

Mr Tippett has very good in turning Stanway around and it does appear he may be overstretching himself. However, his response to Essex County Councils options seems to have a very empowering thread. i.e. Raise teaching standards, not just aestethics. TLA has improved and I don't think increasing traffic to drive children from one side of Colchester to Stanway, Philip Morant, Gilberd would help the communities that seem to want to keep their schools. I agree, if option 4 would go ahead I would like to see them very individualistic and specialise in something. The whole process seems - imo - to be ill thought out and rushed by Essex CC>

OP posts:
SparklyPrincess · 05/12/2008 16:47

I've heard of Stanway teachers being told that they're moving to TLA - not asked. Hardly going to be getting an enthusiastic staff.

The process has been rushed because the original proposal (last year I think) of merging TLA and AB was thrown out by local parents.

Bear in mind also that SCL and AB are under threat of closure by the governments 'Schools challenge' of improving gcse results. The 3 schools into 1 thing sounds like a fiddle so that the average would be above the closure mark.

The only option that made any sense to me was the one that reshuffled the schools and catchments entirely, anything else is just sticking plasters, but it won't happen cos they've made it too expensive.

I'm quite curious to see where they're intending to send all the kids that will be living in Myland when they've built the gazillion houses they're planning to over the next decade or so. There's no answer to that in the proposals at all.

Oh, and according to our local councillor the University knew nothing about the academy on their land until the document was published recently.

Essexgel - if option 4 were to do ahead the schools couldn't be separate specialisms (and the specialist status is generally a bit of a red herring anyway)

essexgel · 05/12/2008 21:16

It's all political and Essex County Council have cobbled this proposal together and don't seem to have thought through alot. Our 2ndary school DC feed into looks like their admissions policy could change to prioritise out-of-cathment TLS/AB children ahead of siblings/catchment etc which does concern me..Put a woman in charge!!Was planning to go to meeting next Tuesday however, really believe I'm wasting my time getting childcare. I certainly do not believe option 4 has all the right answers and pretty sure Hanningfield won't even consider it

OP posts:
Mung · 06/12/2008 08:54

The best option is to move out of Colchester to a town that has a secure secondary school system...or vote with your feet and Home Educate, of course

SparklyPrincess · 06/12/2008 14:09

Tbh Mung, if we don't get the secondary school that we're in catchment for at the moment (or a place in the girls high despite my thinking on selective schools ...) I probably would HE. I really like our local primary though so I don't see the need for it at the moment.

That and I'd have thrown one of them out of the window by the time they're seven...

pooter · 10/12/2008 17:06

yep - we may see a big rise in numbers of home-edders!

I am in favour of smaller schools - it gets so impersonal and anonymous when you get above 700ish.

essexgel, you have spurred me on to having a good look at this despite my intention to HE!

MissisBoot · 10/12/2008 21:03

SP - is St Helena the catchment secondary school for us?

Mung · 10/12/2008 21:07

For your sake, I hope not MissisBoot. I think it is The Gilberd...well, at the moment it is anyway.

Essexgel...what is the secondary that your primary feeds into?

MissisBoot · 10/12/2008 21:16

Does it depend on which primary they go to or is it based on where you're living?

SparklyPrincess · 10/12/2008 22:24

It's where you're living, MB

This is the catchment (priority admissions, whatever it is this week) for St Helena -
www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/showSchool.do?subdistrict=&stype=Secondary&district=Colchester&school_id =4004; their admissions criteria is also on the essex admission website, it goes by where you live, not by feeder school. The admissions policy is decided by the school not the LEA. Not exactly sure where you live, but it looks like St Helena.

We're Gilberd, but tbh if they build all those houses on Severalls they'd be closer than us and I'm not sure we'll get a place. Will start worrying about that when DD1 gets to yr 5 or 6 though!

Essexgel - also interested to know which secondary school you mean? Can't really understand why any school would do that unless they don't like they're own catchment area!! Saying that, my old school (not local, did it and now it's rubbish...)

essexgel · 11/12/2008 09:38

We're Philip Morant..I remember reading the consultation proposal and how the children from TLA/AB would get a into a 2ndary school and admission policies may change, and pretty sure it stated that other children from TLA/AB would go in on number 2 on to the list. Which means ahead of catchement, siblings, feeders etc. I'm not sure if this is what will happen however, it does concern me!
