Mum to be - a bit lost and freaked out.

Hi all, I've just found out I'm going to be a mum for the first time and I'm a bit weepy and pleased and terrified and elated all at once. Is there anyone in Truro or indeed, Cornwall who has time to be a pregnancy chum? Doesn't matter whether you're pregnant, have little ones or they're all grown up. Not had any experience with kids (I've only got very old siblings) so am totally lost.

Well I'm not maternal at all, had a bad upbringing and haven't got the faintest idea what to do with a baby. I seem to have a billion questions and no answers at the moment!

hi ya, have you talked to your midwife yet?

they can suggest a whole host of local groups and sure-start initatives. i think there are even groups for young mothers and single mums (don't know if applies to you).

they can also help with accessing second-hand baby stuff and get you connected to a Health Visitor if housing etc is a problem.

also, please be aware that midwives are only human and if you don't get on with the midwife asigned to you you are entitled to ask for a different midwife for advice.

i'm in falmouth, so different situation, but good luck with finding someone to talk to in-person!

Aw thanks. I have my first midwife appointment on Wednesday and trying to think of what to ask her. Hormones are sending me mental and poor hubby is doing his best to cope.

Thank you for calming words of encouragement. Bizarely it feels like it's all in my head, as the GP just took my word for it that the pregnancy test was positive. I don't think it'll start sinking in until someone official looking says I am!

it does sometimes feel like its all in your imagination sometimes.will you be scanned at treliske?wait till you see the scan and get to see your little baby,then start feeling it move!itll all be real!congratulations btw!

Well, I think I'm 5 weeks but bizarrely despite being blessed with a totally flat belly, at the moment I look about 4 months gone as I've got a right bloarded littled pot belly. All toilet functions normal so no idea what's going on.

I have the first apt with the midwife on Wednesday morning and when I explained on the phone my lifelong terror of the pain of labour she laughed and said "wait till you see the lovely drugs I have for your". Now THAT's the sort of thing that calms me down!!

The bloating is a hormone reaction it des calm down. Are you taking folic acid?

I have had 3 babies - yes labour does hurt but it is definitely manageable. I had gas and air - that makes you feel drunk - you could have an epidural and be numb!!

Phew! Thanks Scorpio. I was beginning to think I was further along than I am, or expecting twins! Am taking folic acid and am off to Boots today in search of pregnacare or similar.
