Home Educate??
If you are, you are not alone! Me, Snippety and Mung are all going to do it, and want to set up a very informal group of Mums with toddlers to meet up once a fortnight ish. The aim is to get to know each other, let the children forge some friendships with people they can see during school time (when that finally arrives) and to be able to talk and get enthusiastic with people who wont tell us that we are 'ruining our children's lives' or say 'but what about socialisation' .

Anyway - who's in?? Who's out?

i love the idea.... LONG way off for me ( i'm 16 w pregnant with first) but i Obviously know nothing about it, as i wasnt even sure it was legal in the UK. Somehow i'd got it into my head it was a US idea only!

Do you have any guidence to the circumulum you should be teaching them? how does it work?

Sorry rather interested but know very little!

Mung · 11/08/2008 15:56

rrrayray...check out the HE section on MN and have a look at Education Otherwise website.

pooter · 11/08/2008 17:19

Dont worry rrayray - DS is only 16mo and im ridiculously excited with it already!!

Totally legal - you just need to be able to show you are providing an appropriate education for your children " at school or otherwise" (hence the name of the group Education Otherwise).

There are as many ways to HE as there are families who do it (apparently - im sounding like i know what im talking about - i dont, but have read a lot!) Personally im going to try the unstructured 'follow the child's interests' method, what do they call it....cant remember, but basically, no lesson plans, no formal teaching, just have your children with you and talk to them and see where they want to go with it. Other people do more of a 'school at home' method, and most do something inbetween.

Come to our first meeting!!! (we have not arranged anything yet, im just trawling around looking for potentially interested mums). Ive loads of books you could borrow.

Hi all,

Just to say I'm really excited about this too and think a group would be an excellent idea; support for us and some home schooled friends for our children. I've already spoken to a couple of people who're doing this with older kids. Perhaps we could get someone to come and do a Q&A for the group about it so we avoid obvious pitfalls? Also it would help to be able to share skills, knowledge and resources
