Is it usual to wait for 16 weeks before seeing a midwife?

Anyone else been told they won't get to see a midwife until 16 weeks? What happens with 12 week scans?

I just called the antenatal clinic at Whipps X and asked them when I should expect to see a midwife for the first time - they said that a midwife will contact me and it will be at around 16 weeks.

This seems quite a while to wait (I'm 8 weeks at the mo): NHS Direct says you should see a midwife by 10 weeks.

I've already seen my GP twice and had a scan at 6w 3d as I've been having spotting and pain.

bumping for you

it's fairly usual to get a scan appt and then see the MW after that so 14-16 weeks

Thanks. Got a phone message this morning asking me to call to make a booking appointment, so hopefully will be able to see someone soon.

Plethora - if you're worried you can always see the midwife at your local children's centre if you're close to one. I saw the midwife at mine, and she was brilliant. I could see her whenever I wanted to, didn't have to wait until the 'proper' times, and had half hour appointments which meant I could chat about whatever I wanted to. I didn't have my kids at Whipps so don't know what their situation is re. scans, but I highly recommend the children's centre midwife service. I know Lloyd Park and Woodside have one, not sure about any others.

Thank you for suggestions. Spoke to the midwife associated with my GP practice this morning after she called me and left a message; I think the lady at the antenatal clinic at Whipps didn't understand my original question. Got a second early scan booked for tomorrow as unfortunately this pregnancy doesn't look too hopeful
