Care home for advanced dementia, Cambridge, UK

Hi,

I wondered if anybody could give me an idea of where would be a suitable care home for my DM?

She has very advanced Lewy Body Dementia. She can't get into or out of bed without using a hoist and can't really co-operate to help. She can longer reliably say any words at all. She needs to be fed, and can't always muster the thought processes to swallow her medication even with a lot of encouragement.

She is in the hospital just now and my DF would like to find a care home for her to be discharged to.

He rang Bramley Court, which would be very suitable, but they are full.

I just wondered if anyone would know of other places in the area that are similar to Bramley Court?

I suppose realistically we are looking for somewhere that does really good end of life care and care for very advanced dementia.

Thank you for your help.

Cherry Hinton Rd or Manor Care home by TLC. Excelcare are also good but less fancy

@GotToWearShades Do manor care home take people with very advanced dementia and do end of life care?

I rang them and they seemed never to have been asked about how they would deal with a patient who needs care in the night and when I asked about end of life care the nurse sounded quite offended by the idea. I head then that Bramley Court were more suitable for this kind of need, and I called them and they were great, but they are now full.

I know someone with a relative at Cambridge Grove in Fulbourn. Says it's great but pricey.

Thanks, that's a bit far for us as we are north city and north villages.

2 people I know had family members there at nursing care level. One other was at Excelcare Buchan House and it was definitely end of life care and night time monitoring nursing care

Hi. Sorry to her about your DM.

All Nursing Homes will have frequent experience of End of Life Care as it’s inevitably a significant part of the care they provide.

My DM was cared for in Manor Care Home and my DF in Cherry Hinton ( same company) . My DM was bedbound. My Dad was well at that time and visited her daily to take her favourite foods and spend the day with her so I don’t have personal experience of how her care would have been without that but the staff were kind and caring.

I never had any concerns regarding either setting and they both provided good end of life care. I visit a lot of Care and Nursing Homes through work and they are both good homes in my experience.

Another vote for Woodlands Care Centre which is where my dad went. People discount it because of the location but the care my dad received was absolutely amazing. By the time he went there he had fairly advanced Alzheimer’s and was there until he died.
