Nice/safe places to live in Bristol?

Hi everyone.

I am new here. I grew up in the South West but lived for a few years in London, and then abroad in NZ. Husband and I are looking for a rental in Bristol and have got ourselves a short term let in Kingswood.

I am wondering if anyone would be able to recommend a nice area in Bristol? We have a budget of up to 1200/month (ideally less than this as I am trying to save up for a deposit, but having to stretch the budget as Bristol is $$$!). I just want a small 2 bed, with somewhere to park my car and ideally a small outside space (a small patio or deck area would be fine). In a safe and friendly area.
We cycle, so being near the cycle path would be nice but not essential.

I am not enjoying Kingswood particularly. It looks very tired and depressing. I don't feel massively safe. But the distance from the city centre is fine. We have seen a property in Hillfields, and I like the look of Fishponds area a bit more, but have heard bad things about Hillfields.

I would love to be in as green/leafy area as possible. But not too far out (the likes of Bradley Stoke, Emersons Green etc). I don't think we can afford areas like Clifton.

It seems that parts of Bristol change very quickly, what used to be bad area is now on the up and vice versa. Any recommendations? Thank you!

Came on to say Clifton but see you have kind of vetoed. Bishopston?

I agree with you about Kingswood feeling tired - I wouldn't see it as unsafe but YMMV. Hanham, Fishponds, St. George, Brislington are all worth investigating. Staple Hill and Downend are a bit further out but might be good value and are certainly safe. Horfield is a good area if you can find something in budget.

What you want to do is get a map, follow cycle path and map against other things you want (proximity to shops or parks etc) and see what's available in those areas. Page park is nice, Easton, redfield maybe a bit less but nice enough.

Safety is never 100% and depends who you are as much as where you are. Some areas have high crime rates but if you're not in a gang, it's unlikely to impact you. I'm pretty sure you're more at risk of mugging/burglary in fancy areas like Clifton.

It also depends if you go clubbing etc, a lot of east Bristol is fine in the day but I wouldn't necessarily want to be there at 3am. Hills are also a factor depending how you get about!

Kingswood is depressing as fuck. But I suppose you get more for your money.

Where do you work?

Thanks, no not in to clubbing! Wouldn't mind going in to town to see the odd band etc.

Partner works in the center. I will be working in Brislington, but just on a temp contract.
