Leys School

Hi,

I wondered if I could ask whether a nervous child who loves learning is likely to have a happy time at the Leys?

We are looking to find new school. Probably for year 9 entry next September, or possibly for A levels 3 years later.

Looking for a safe, caring environment with good communication between parents and teachers. Happy to pay full fees, no need for bursary or scholarship.

Thanks!

This is the Leys in Cambridge, UK that I'm asking about.

I used to teach in a prep school feeding into The Leys and am also a mum, grandmother and private tutor in the Cambridge area (specialising in preparing children for entry assessments at 7+, 11+ and 13+) so have lots of contact with parents and children going to a variety of different schools in this area. I hear very mixed views from parents and children at The Leys - it seems to polarise people who either love it and are happy there or hate it and are very unhappy.
The school I consistently hear most positive feedback about is King’s Ely - who have a great reputation for their pastoral care, especially nurturing nervous children. It’s an easy train ride from Great Shelford, Cambridge or Waterbeach, (where I live) and a short walk from the station - lots of children commute by train so your ds wouldn't be alone.
Unfortunately, whichever selective, independent school you decide to apply for, you have missed the deadline for September 2024 entry as most closed registrations last October and their entry assessments are mid January - only 2-3 weeks away. However, you can always ring and speak to the school’s admissions officer, especially if there are any extenuating circumstances. I’ve certainly known King’s Ely bend over backwards to help a late entrant in a difficult situation. Good luck!

Hi Nenen,

Thank you very much for commenting. Would it be okay if pm you to ask a question? I'm in a fiddly situation and would be so grateful to ask for your advice, especially as you know the local schools so well. I would be happy to pay for your time.

Thanks!

Hi, it’s fine to PM me - thank you for asking first.

Hi there… I have 1 daughter in her last year at The Leys and we looked at the surrounding independent schools both for year 9 and sixth form including kings Ely …. I’d be happy to answer any questions. Defo ring these schools up too, since a lot will still have spaces due to VAT.

My son has just received an offer from the Leys for 16+.
I wondered if I could ask whether a shy science boy who is full-boarding is likely to have a happy time at the Leys?
Thank you!
