I'm thinking of making a huge move from Rotherham to sheffield!! but I don't really know the suburbs of sheffield at all and could use some advice. Public transport is very important (and my reason for moving) but I want to live in a nice area with good schools. will have ca 200k to spend on a 3 bed house.

Can't help as such with your question, but try having a look on this website. It has maps, photos and house prices!!

i'd say try Crookes,S10,3 bed house is approx 200K.Schools good two here Westways and Lydgate, also on fab bus route the 52. Has good collection of shops and is near the city centre.

typical house 1

house 2

thanks guys! my initial feeling about crooks is its too nr the centre! (we are used to the suburbs!) but I think a drive around is in order. would be handy for the hospitals (dd has some sn and is there lots!) but that would also mean that parking is a problem which would put dh right off...

that map site is fab! but it won't help with schools info so any more thoughts greatly appreciated

no sorry!

i live in crookes as do a few other mumsnetters (i'll point them in this direction!) and i personally don't feel to close to town, equally it is far enough away from the hospitals to not be effected by parking but close enough to walk. the bits which are near the hospitals have residents parking only.

it might be worth looking through the archives as not long ago there was a thread on moving to sheffield and there were lots of suggestions on there.

theheadgirl · 12/03/2008 17:27

I'm also in crookes (hi Katz!), and actively chose it, as an ex-sheffielder who was returning after a long time away.
Know people who live in Owlthorpe - lots of new estates. I have a sister who lives in Ecclesfield (mixture of house styles, reasonable schools) and one in walkely (nice houses, like crookes but probably get more for your money there - only prob is poor secondary school IMO)

katz · 12/03/2008 19:12

hi headgirl - Crookes is the best isn't it!

worzella · 12/03/2008 19:17

Oh no katz - definitely Broomhill is better !!

S10 in general is great to be close to town and the green parks of Endcliffe, Bolehills etc. and Botanics so it still feels like the best of both worlds...

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 19:57

I am in S10 too - but further out in Lodge Moor. Very much on the edge of teh country but still less tahn 5 miles from town.

I actually would now like to move back closer to town (was in a city apartment) to live in Broomhill/Crooks area. I miss being xlose t town. Besides all the MNetters I know are round there anyway so would save me taxi fares!

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 19:59

S11 is also good re location (Ecclesall Road plus Encliffe Park, etc) and good schools.

VickyA · 21/03/2008 09:03

Ooh - late vote for Oughtibridge - S35. Reasonable bus links, and good schools - the secondary school (Bradfield) is one of the best in Sheffield.
