Bullers Wood School for Boys

I'm looking for parent views on Bullers Woods School for Boys. I have a Year 6 son and am considering it for him for September 2024.

In particular, are you happy with standard of teaching, culture and environment and availability of sports and other activities?

He's very into sports but unlikely to make the first team, so want to make sure he has lots of opportunity still to participate.

My son is in Y8 at BWSB. It wasn’t our first choice as he passed the 11+ and I wanted to send him to the mixed grammar school in Sidcup but the catchment didn’t reach us that year. However, he is really happy at BWSB and has a good group of friends.

He’s more on the academic/creative side than the sporty side. I feel they could push them a bit more in terms of schoolwork (he doesn’t get much homework at all, for example) but his teachers seem attentive and very keen that the boys meet their potential - my impression is that they step things up a gear in Y9.

In terms of sport, there seems to be a lot going on and they make use of local providers for after school clubs, eg tennis and squash at the cricket club on Plaistow Lane. They also have at least 2 if not 3 teams per year for the main team sports.

A big plus is that it’s likely to be very local to you given the small size of the catchment - my son walks almost every day unless it’s chucking it down and I like that he doesn’t have to go through the centre of Bromley where there is sometimes trouble due to the number of kids passing through at the end of the day.

It’s also a very new school so the classrooms and facilities are very modern - I really noticed the difference when I went to an open day at the much older girls school recently.

One thing to bear in mind is that the school day starts at 7.45am so it’s an early start and finish so you might need to think about ways to keep them occupied after school.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I have found this forum a really helpful source of information about schools so happy to help if I can!

Hi

I wondered how it has been at Bullers Wood Boys since starting in September? My son started Coopers in September and unfortunately has had issues with bullying. I haven't been impressed with how they are managing bullying. I'm thinking we may have to change schools.

If you can give me any insight into this school that would be much appreciated.

@yummychocolate My son is in Y8 at this school. He really likes it and has a nice group of friends. He’s not said much at all about bullying but they seem to have dealt very swiftly with bad and disruptive behaviour. I’d say it was a good school. Its quite a new school and has not had the easiest start - for example, no permanent site for a few years and then covid shortly after they moved in - so you need to make allowances for that. I also don’t think they push high performers as high as they could but maybe that’s fairly normal at non-selective schools. If you have any more specific questions post them here and I will try to answer.
