Jericho, Walton Manor or Summertown (and schools)

Hello, we are moving to Oxford in a few months and I was wondering what the latest was on these three areas, please? Pros / cons? I’m commuting into London once a week and we’re keen on schools in the area-ish (Dragon, Oxford High Prep School)… if anyone has any thoughts on these schools as well, that would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Hello! Ok so basically Jericho flows in to Walton Manor, they are very close and basically the difference is the houses are a bit bigger in WM. Jericho is mostly small cottages. Excellent area, plenty of nice shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, and super close to Port Meadow for walks. Quick walk into town, maybe 20 mins. Close to station too (again, 20 mins walk).

Summertown is further north, also nice, big M&S food hall and other shops, some good restaurants too. A bit cheaper (more for your money for houses). Further into town, but easy buses. Bit far to Oxford station but a short drive to Parkway.

In between the two there’s an area called “North Oxford” (helpful!) which is nice too just a slightly further walk to shops. Couple of newish developments (eg Waterways) here along with the Victorian houses.

Can’t comment on those schools but I don’t think you can go far wrong!

We moved here a couple of years ago so shout if you need other advice.

Thanks - this is really helpful. What’s the risk of ending up next to a house full of students? (I’m not a grinch, I promise, just a mother of a toddler so terrified of prospect of picking somewhere with house parties next door.)

Also, are floods a thing? A nursery I toured in the area near the canal got flooded but just wondering if that was a bit of a one off or if near the canal is a bit flood prone?

Thank you again for your help! I’m excited for the move :)

Students - good question and definitely worth bearing in mind! I would say highest in Jericho, lowest in Summertown, WM and North Ox somewhere in the middle.

Around the canal is a flood risk but we’ve been here nearly three years and I don’t think there have been any issues. FWIW the houses nearest the canal are the most rat-prone!!

Student accommodation in Jericho but the biggest problem will be some asbo types. Jericho isn’t as nice as some outsiders think it is. I’ve lived there for 15 years. Also overpriced for what you get.

I still shudder to remember my years at Oxford High…!

Did you make a decision on schools? I'm trying to figure out our best options and struggling to find consistent positive reviews. OHS is not an option for us and we've heard positive things from people who went to the dragon school ages ago and really negative things about it now. It would be helpful to hear from someone who made the decision.
